There are many leaves before the wind. Knowing you don't need the latest toy is hard knowledge to acquire.

For me, it was pretty easy. Additionally, I don't do photography with toys.

I’m thinking the marketing strategy is going to be camera body price competitive with the Sony top mirrorless but Nikon lenses with the new mount priced in the “nose bleed” altitude range.

I am and was a Nikon Fan. Years of their camera's and they were solid and creative tools.

The lens were always good or great. I still have Nikon lens.

That said making a big deal out of this is not a great marketing idea.

Sony, Panasonic and others have really good mirrorless cameras I own Sony's.

My last experiences with Nikon were so so. D800 had 2 of them didnt do it for me.

Some cards didnt work,. focus errors and the two I owned didnt seem to be the same.

Sony a7III, a7s II (which I own) the Panasonic GH5s etc etc.

I wish Nikon is very successful we all want them to be part of the image creators tools.

We are all happy with what we have until we see something that may do more than we envisioned? I love my D810 and my D500, among the five digital Nikons and several film Nikon cameras I own. But some day I may want a mirrorless? I held off buying the D850 for that reason. You never know what lies beyond the bend on our photographic journey. I am most curious to read about the new offerings from Nikon.

I think it's sad and a bit funny Nikon (or Canon) cannot make a FF mirrorless camera that uses their existing DSLR lenses.
"Sad" that will need an adapter to use existing DSLR lenses to me seem an expense and maybe reduce quality of photos, guess it's a compromise that we have to decide if worth our $s. "Funny" that people will actually jump to the Nikon (or Canon) mirrorless and get the adapter needed. Only fair reason I see is current DSLR you have dies...
OR as many have just switch to brands like Sony...

You took "toy" way too literal.

No. I got tired of waiting for Canon and Nikon to produce a pro-grade mirrorless YEARS ago. Panasonic Lumix and Olympus have a decade's head start on them — and 90+ native lenses. Fujifilm and Sony each have several years' head start, too. I'll be sticking with my Lumix, unless Canikon give me a better video experience (doubtful!).

I'm happy for them... I used both Canon and Nikon from 1968-2012. The marketplace will benefit from their innovations (although they're the big beneficiaries of the mirrorless leaders, right now!).

I can see a gradual migration from dSLR to mirrorless may stretch out over the next 20 years. At some point in that path, most dSLR development will be discontinued. Looking back, though, it only took a few years for digital technology to kill off the majority of film cameras (and Eastman Kodak as we knew it). So it may happen sooner! Paradigm shifts can occur rapidly.

That's probably a good assessment. Their new lenses will take advantage of the wider "throat" of the new mount. So they'll emphasize speed. Nikon will, as usual, front-load development costs into the first few years' production of the new lenses. If they're like others, they'll make some pro grade glass and some lesser glass for less-well-heeled enthusiasts.

Nikon wins an award for ugly.
They might as well go all out and reinvent the system. Using lenses from another era is always a compromise, either to the camera design or the lens function. Despite the numerous conversations about using old lens and cross brands, I doubt that many photographers do this for their basic shooting.
At my age I would like to see a medium size camera (easy to grip) that is light weight. I would buy a couple of not heavy full function lens to work with it, and save the magnified shooting for my DSLR.
