I have a Nikon D7100 + 18 - 200 mm and 18 - 300 mm lenses. The 300 is a little heavy but I use it to photograph ships in my back yard on the Hudson river with a tripod. See my website at "woodywud.smugmug.com".
Now Adorama had a flash sale on some Nikkor prime lenses so on a whim I purchased 50 mm lens which I got today with the excitement of something I thought I needed. But now in retrospect do I realy need it. I am trying to think of situations where the 50 mm would be better but I can't
think of one. The 18 - 200 mm lens weight is not that much heavier then the 50mm lens and up to now has done what i needed with that extra reach which we like to know is available
Can anyone tell me why I need the 50mm in my bag

What is the maximum aperture of the lens?
If it is something like f2 or f1.4 it will give you more exposure options when shooting hand held in low light.
It may also give you shallower depth of field to help with subject isolation, when used wide open.

The 50mm 1.8 is excellent when shooting people is social situations. Great bokeh.

LOl, I jumped on the bandwagon four or five years ago due to everyone just raving about it. It's a very nice lens. My wife may have used it at Christmas last year. I don't recall because I was busy with my 24-70. The 70-200 fills the voids.

You don't, you just fell for the hype. Bet you never use it after checking it out.

I don’t even own one.
Never liked that focal length for any of my shooting.

That's why I tell people to use the kit lens or zoom most have and see what focal lengths they typically use.

The 50 fits nicely on a shelf with my 35,85 and 105. I have them in a line in ascending order and they look quite nice.

I have several 50mm lenses. It's the only lens I had for my Nikon F for years. Since it wouldn't work on my D700, I purchased another 50mm when I purchased my D700 and use it on my D800e (purchased later) as well. I also use a KMZ 50mm f/2 and an Elmar 50mm f/3.5 on my Leica.

Of course, I do a bit more than just photograph ship traffic from my backyard. I have to, as there is no ship traffic within a number of hundred miles from my backyard. However, I still use the 50s a number of times per month.

The 50mm probably has an f/1.4 or f/1.8 maximum aperture. That's great for low light conditions and will help to achieve a shallow depth of field for portraits. I have a Tamron 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens. The large max. aperture and the vibration compensation make it a great low light lens.

Another great thing about prime lenses is they usually have almost zero distortion. The engineers can optimize the lens around one focal length. Look at these test shots of the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 and Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 lens at 50mm.

This is how they described the distortion of the 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 lens:

Already at 35 mm the pincushion distortion becomes quite intense, soaring to +2.24%, and by 50 mm it is even higher as its value reaches +2.71%. It is one of the highest pincushion distortion results we've ever seen in our tests.

Nikon 50mm f/1.8 (-0.49% distortion)
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 (-0.49% distortion)...

Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 lens set to 50mm (+2.71% pincushion distortion)
Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 lens set to 50mm (+2.71% ...

You need the 35mm 1.8 DX more than you need a 50mm.

.....I did try a 58mm f1.2 Minolta once from a friend of mine - did well and APSC ! ......then some body gave me a Sears (Soligor) 55 f1.4 in M42 screw mount that I thought I would play with some day on APSC with adapters - gorgeous lens !

When I shot film, I can never remember having/shooting with a 50mm .......the first lens I bought with my Pentax Spotmatic was the 85 1.9 - and then the Vivitar 35 1.9 .

LOL, I exaggerated a bit because I do like the 35 Art on occasion. You guys know that basically it depend on what you normally enjoy. Nice to have a few choices and that's what it's about, at least for me. I shoot crop and ff like many others here.
