Canon Sale

I received an email from Canon U.S.A. today informing me of a sale of Canon merchandise. I noticed they had two refurbished EOS 80D cameras on sale, one was body only and the other had the 55mm IS STM lens. What I thought was strange was that the body only camera was priced at $899.20 after a $60.00 discount but the camera with lens was $849.20 after a $230.00 discount. The camera with lens was $50.00 less than the one without the lens. I find that a little strange. Maybe that particular lens is a piece of crap and this is Canon's way of dumping them. If anybody wanted a refurb 80D they might as well buy the one with the lens and save $50. Then they could throw the lens away if they didn't want it or sell it on UHH.

There may be other factors involved here.

This happens sometimes on the Canon Refurbished site. It most likely means they have more refurbished 80D units that originally sold with the kit lens, that they need to move. The Canon 18-55 kit lens isn't a bad lens, it is just very basic. Someone certainly could buy the 80D with the lens, save money and post the lens for sale here on UHH or elsewhere, and make a few bucks. When purchased by itself new, it is about a $100.00 lens.

Even if you don't ever use the 18-55, it is nice to have when you go to resell or even if you want to gift a basic kit to a beginner.

First, if you want an 80D, then a refurb is a good idea. I bought one a year ago. Secondly, the 18-55 STM is not a bad lens, but if you have that range covered and it is still cheaper to buy the kit, buy the kit. You still have as new warranty.

Occasionally even better prices appear. How much of a hurry are you in?

I just thought it odd that they would sell a camera with a lens for less money than the same camera without a lens. I don't plan on getting one, I was just curious. And, no I don't think they are trying to dump the lens. I guess I should have put one of these up with the post.

I bought a refurbed 60D a few years ago.

I'm in no hurry since I don't plan on getting a new camera until they come out with the Exakta VXIIIA.
