According to my book, they look like 'black-bellied whistling ducks'.

Yes, that's what it is. Good shot. They certainly have their "wings" full with all that family to shield at night

Yeah, that's quite a brood. My book says normally 12-14 eggs. Momma must have really been pooped after laying 25!

Thanks, I also found it finally in my book. Never saw a family that large before. Going back on thursday to see if I can get closer for better photos of the little ones.

That has to be one of the most unsual names for ducks with BROWN bellies ---and 'whistling'? -- Woud have to hear that!

The belly portion that is black is not visible in the posted photo. It is under water and obscured by shadow. See pics here:http://www.google.com/search?q=black+bellied+whistling+duck&hl=en&qscrl=1&nord=1&rlz=1T4WDIA_enUS329US337&site=webhp&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=yv8WUNuoA8SXqAH9_oGIBA&sqi=2&ved=0CFAQsAQ&biw=1265&bih=765

Thanks

I can now see that there is some basis to include black in their name !! but---I would still like to hear them whistle!!!
