Winged wheel

At the York railroad museum, there's a huge bronze plaque in honor of George Stephenson of Stephenson's Rocket fame, done in thirties heroic worker style. This is a detail from the border, showing a railroad wheel with wings. The gilding has nearly worn away now, but judging from the attendance at the museum, the gilding has not worn off the imagination of railroad fans.

From York, across the pond. Not sure when the Red Wings were formed (and, being rather lame, not even sure what sport that might be), but I'm pretty sure neither symbol is derived from the other.

LOL I recall reading somewhere that it goes back to Greek Mythology. Maybe, maybe not but the winged wheel thing goes way back

Formed in 1926, the Detroit Red Wings are a professional hockey team (ice hockey) located in Detroit Michigan. One of the original six teams that are now the NHL (National Hockey League). Maybe not popular in the U.K., but a big deal here and elsewhere.

And, the logos are similar, except for wheel. Railroad vs automobile. 👍🤓👍

The winged wheel from ancient times usually was shown as a circle with wings, and the circle is thought to represent the solar disk. Spokes, when present, are thought to represent rays from the sun. Alternate explanations have the spoked circle representing the wheel of the chariot of the sun. As far as I know, none of the ancient representations show a railroad flange on the wheel, but I could be mistaken...

I'm sure the ancients didn't include a flange. However, that doesn't preclude one from being a derivative of the other.
