Who says that any hummingbird has to be a ruby throated hummingbird?
This one is a Broad Tail Hummingbird.
Any hummingbird doesn't have to be a Ruby-throated; it has to be what it is. There are around 356 species of hummingbirds, of which only one is the Ruby-throated. Depending on geographic location, the only hummingbird species one may encounter in the wild is the Ruby-throated but that doesn't make all hummingbirds Ruby-throated.
By the way, nice hummingbird photo.
I fully agree, morrison1116 with you.
I displayed the hummingbird picture as an aswer to another UHH member (GoldwingerTX) who asked for an ID of his two images of a hummingbird but several UHH members identified it as a ruby-throated hummingbird.
Well, I think my image shows a very similar bird to his (green top, gray bottom) - but it is not a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird.
Cheers!
Ruby Throated hummingbirds are almost always the only hummer you will see east of the Mississippi. There are always exceptions but few enough that you would be safe in most instances betting money on it.
