Beautiful set Corky. Great story too and I hope your plants survive. I have had Lantana for years and they continue to attract butterflies and other pollinators. Inspired by Angela's Monarch saga, I have also started to cultivate Milkweed. Thank you for being a part of the solution.

Thank you for the kind words, Jan and thank you for also being part of the solution. We have fifteen milkweed plants with about half being common and the other half swamp milkweed, but many are small and seem to be slow growing---some may need more sun and also grow parsley for black swallowtails. My butterfly books show the Zebra Swallowtails all the way to the tip of Florida but one mentioned that populations can vary quite a bit but the most needed item if they are in the area, are Pawpaw Trees and I know some types are in Florida, but they may not be close enough for them to stop by your location. I had been searching for several years and ordered two large and expensive bare rooted ones from a nursery in the western part of the county which was a waste of time because neither of them budded out but then happened to find a nursery in Virginia this season that has beautiful potted ones so we drove 130 miles to pick some up several weeks ago and would recommend this nursery to anyone as they are so very nice and knowledgeable about Pawpaw trees and they are very particular about preparing their trees for shipping! Take care!

Sorry about the Pawpaw trees but it seems you are well on your way. I don't know how many I get in this area but I keep looking for them.

We had viewed images of a few Zebra Swallowtails several times, but our first sighting of one was while flower shopping in Williamsburg about a month ago. We had just placed several lantana plants in our shopping basket and suddenly this beautiful butterfly lands on one of the lantanas within a few inches of our hands and began nectaring and we could hardly believe our eyes---so beautiful! Several weeks passed and while working with the flowers in our yard an unusual butterfly flew by fairly low to the ground and my first thought was that it was a dragonfly, but when it landed ion our butterfly bush it became apparent that this was our first and so far only Zebra that we have observed at our home! Last season we had planted two of their host trees, bare rooted Pawpaws, but they never budded out. After the recent sighting, we located a nursey about 130 miles from our home and purchased some very nice potted trees of very good quality and sure hope that they live.

Many thanks, Rob and they are so beautiful. A few weeks later we had lunch in Williamsburg and decided to stop by the Williamsburg Botanical Garden and when we arrived found that the Virginia Beach Butterfly Association was holding a function featuring the lives of butterflies and moths including the caterpillars, chrysalis and their butterflies, in a number of tents and displays. They also had native plants for sale and many youngsters were attending and had special programs especially for them.
We had seen a listing of the show several months before but had completely slipped our mind and was so sorry as they had less than two hours left when we arrived! They had many of the butterflies native to Virginia on display and as a finale with the children gathered around released them a few at a time to everyone's great enjoyment and of course some released were the Zebra Swallowtails! We returned about a week later and did manage to take a few images of some Zebra Swallowtails which I assumed had stayed around after the release although the garden center volunteers said some visit from time to time. I have been planning to post a few but hadn't taken the time, but will take a look now and hopefully attach a image! Take care!
