CO I shoot the AF 135mm f/2.0 regularly on a Nikon D3x and it is simply awesome! razor sharp stopped down a tad...
However it is dependent on the camera body... shooting this lens on a D7200 is unacceptable... it suffers from serious CA wide open and must be stopped down considerably to eliminate... This lens was designed for film not digital... and mastering it's DC control is a long arduous process...

btw, I had to wait many mouths for B&H to get one in... it appears Nikon now realizes the popularity of this optic and has continued to produce same to meet demands...

Keep in mind this is strictly a portrait lens which works beautifully on full frame...
No way would I attempt to use this for indoor sports etc... it does not handle point source high contrast lights well...
That said, it is a gem for those days when the sky is overcast... a.k.a. a beautiful soft light lens..

Also for evenly lit sunlight it is awesome...
see below...

Hope this helps or is at least food for thought...

I once owned the 105DC and agree with Thomas. Not sure if it makes any difference about FX v DX though, but I found in bright conditions the CA was terrible, and irreparable. At the time, I was using a D300.

Since I live where I get a lot of bright days, I got rid of it: I simply couldn’t rely on it to produce a good image. I wanted it work, but it was just terrible...from memory, I also needed to put in a whole heap of correction for back-focus.

I am however, very tempted by the new 105mm f1.4E!

Thanks for the information. I'm not sure if I will get one now. Maybe I'll go for an 85mm or 105mm lens. That new Nikon 105mm f/1.4E lens is supposed to be awesome.

The 105, and 135mm DC’s seem to have a fairly polarised user base. Love’em or hate ‘em it seems. I really tried to love mine, 100-130mm is a nice length for portraiture, and when that 105mm DC nailed it, it nailed it! But I just couldn’t rely on it. Seems everybody loves the 105mm f1.4E though, bar the entry price!

I’m away from home for a few more months yet, but next year I intend to consolidate my photography gear. I’ll be trading a few of my lesser used primes for 105mm f1.4E then.
