There is a movement to rename Austin, Texas as well as removing any references to the confederacy or s***ery.

George Washington owned s***es. We may want to think about renaming the name of our nation's capitol. Can anyone suggest a modern name? How about Buchanan AC/DC?

Things get renamed all the time. Very popular things or people of the past may be unknown either today or in the future. There are a finite number of things to be named. If I want to rename Austin, I should be told to mind my own business. If the people of Austin want to rename it, isn't it their business? Look how many streets have been renamed Martin Luther King Junior. The problem with that one is his name doesn't fit on an envelope.

Maybe they will be patriotic and name it Santa Anna, so all of the i******s will feel at home.

Now there is a thought. I have heard that the people in austin are not to keen on changing the name. I don't live there so I don't know for certain.

I heard about this on the local morning drive show. Austin created an "Equity Office" that came up with numerous recommendations for change, eliminating anything that could remotely be tied to any actual history of the city. The actual citizenry isn't too keen on the idea.

I guess it could happen but I doubt it would be for that reason. I truly believe that as long as it isn't r****t or indecent, and what I know of Austin suggest it wouldn't be, it just isn't up to me, and if you don't live there it shouldn't be up to you either.

So, if the people of Austin are against it, who is in favor of it. Is it coming from outside, or is it a minority from Austin? I'm curious.

Maybe this will help more than I can. I live about 260 miles from Austin so I don't get the Austin local news.

I can imagine what a PITA it would be for the City Council. Imagine changing all the names on all the signs in and outside the city. Highway signs, direction signs, hospitals, libraries, etc. Just that alone would cost a lot of $$$, never mind every single person living there would have to change their address on all correspondence, bills, subscriptions, etc. Kind of a nightmare IMO. Would Austin City Limits have to change their name? What if they change it to, say, Mazatlan. Somehow Mazatlan City Limits just doesn't sound right.....

It doesn't take much to stir the bar stool patriots and bean counters. No Texas town will be renamed unless the Russian Jade Helm plot is fully realized.

I guess I'm not as politically correct as you, after all I still think in this country we can express an opinion or is that against big brothers rules?

I don't recall trying to prohibit you from expressing your opinion. You aren't trying to stop me from expressing my opinion, are you?

It's out of context. It sounds much better at a rally.

I am curious if there is a population that is offended by the name, or feels somehow suppressed by the name, but I think this thread has been beaten to death.

SF Austin died about 25 years before the Civil War but he did own s***es and was obviously pro s***ery. Thus he should be wiped from history.
