Greeting the dawn

This photo was taken with a Nikon F3 and Ilford fp4. I could have reduced the effect of the grain, but I rather like it in this photo. I was shooting wide angle shots of the surf right at dawn, when this woman walked up and put herself in the frame. I picked up my F3 which was loaded with film and a longer lens and took this shot. She was about 20 feet away from me.

Great capture Erich. I started with Nikon film cameras, and I still keep a couple of them loaded. The film has better tonal range I think, and I miss advancing the film. Crazy eh? I think the woman makes this shot.

I agree about the woman making the shot. I still shoot b&w film with two or three cameras, two slr’s and a twin lens. It’s fun playing with the old guys.

Very good, Erich. I'm with you on the grain. It's a great "mood" shot. And I agree with the others about the woman's presence.

Yes, it is fun. I'm starting to become a believer that there is just something about the way images look when they come from film....even if they have been scanned. Maybe not better, because that is totally subjective anyway; but certainly different. Besides, the process of loading film, advancing it manually, and then developing the negatives brings me back to the old days. I like that.

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the shot. I think your point about the grain is spot on.

I really like this - the moodiness is wonderful.

Thank you. I was lucky that I had a camera loaded with black and white film when this shot presented itself. I was actually shooting the sunrise with my digital camera and a wide lens. The woman just walked up from behind me and sat down on a the jetty close to where I was working. The wide angle lens I had on my digital camera would not have produced the perspective that I wanted for this shot, so I grabbed the old Nikon with a 50mm lens and got the perspective I wanted. The film and the grain, I think, are what produce the "mood". Thanks for taking a look.

Great work!

Your absolutely correct! I do many times shoot in color and convert to B&W in digital PP.

I was speaking about film. Looking over my post I didn't make that clear.

That is what I assumed. There are not that many of us shooting film these days; but my local photo shop has started stocking a lot more film lately, so I think the numbers are rising.
