I like the first shot; but I prefer the second because of the interaction and we can see the folks. I know seeing the faces in street photography is not essential; but sometimes it helps to give us a more intimate connection with the subjects.
Having said that, I do like the first shot as well and I can well imagine that I would have taken the photo also had it presented itself to me.

I think that #1 works very well the way it is presented. I think that it would lose quite a bit of impact if it was made monochromatic or B&W. The colors create a story that is integrated.
