Hello,

I want to take photos of the Flatiron buibling at sunset.

Can the photo be taken so the sunset is between the Flatiron building and the other buidlings?

Something similar to the Manhattanhenge.

Thank you

Thank you for sending. I have heard of what you sent me. I don't see to really be able to follow it.

Put yourself in front of the Flatiron Building facing it. To your left is West to your right is East. You will have to walk around the west side of building (your left) to find the place to get your best pictures of sunset on the building. Also know the time for sunset in New York City. Have your camera lock and loaded, you will only have a very short time to get your sunset picture. Good Luck.

I think you've got things backwards. The iconic views of the Flatiron Building are those when generally looking South. In that position West will be to your right and East is to your left, not the other way around. Certainly you can take pictures of it from the West side of the building, but then you completely lose the shape and scale that made it famous.

The best views are looking South from Fifth Avenue or Broadway above 23rd Street. I would suggest shooting it from somewhere between 24th and 26th Street on 5th Avenue, Broadway or from Madison Square. I don't know whether from that position the OP will be able to frame the building with the sun positioned where he would like it.

Photopills should do the same thing. It is much easier to use. I have both but couldn’t get off the ground with photoephemaris.

I agree with others....North South is the ideal angle. Get back, get low and shoot. I have been trying for years to capture the shot that Harold ROTH took in 1946, and this is the best I've managed https://www.flickr.com/photos/138387392@N07/43711069472/in/datetaken/

That's a nice shot. How come they don't make buildings like that anymore? Is it because they can't find enough skinny people to occupy it?

I think you may have reversed the East and West locations. Looking downtown the East River is on your left side. The West Side on your right. Fifth Ave. is the dividing line between East and West.

What a Question !!!!!

Who did your homework for you when you were in school?

I suggest going there every day around sundown for 6 months; then, you'll find out.

If you don't live in, or near, midtown Manhattan... well.. Life ain't easy is it?

Just for the record I did my own homework. I was a stait A student.

I know I can go to the building myself. That is what I was planning.

As for New York City I am there every weekday since I work in lower Manhattan.

The situation is I am up at 5:00AM everyday and may not get home from work until 1:00AM the next morning.

I am also in the process of planning a Flatiron shoot for a group I belong to within the next couple of months.

So with my time constrants from work and trying to plan the shoot for my group it is quite obvious I would not have 6 months to devote to just take pictures of the building.

So I was smart enough to seek assistance from the forum. That is what the forum is for.

I suggest you study the Flatiron on Google maps to get an idea of how you want the sun in the photo. It’ll be setting behind the buildings long before going below the horizon. You can use street view very easily.
Good luck!

I think getting a sunset shot from the park (maybe near Shake Shack) is a slight possibility. But you may need to do it in the winter when the sun is further south. It won't be a true sunset, since by true sunset the sun will be lost from that position. But you might be able to get something an hour or two before sunset. I do not think there is a good vantage point for a sunrise due to several buildings to the east that would block the view.
