Last Night's Moon

I took this last night on a monopod at 400mm, f/9 and ISO 2000. This moon is a product of the California wildfire smoke drifting into Utah. The edges are blurred and I do not know if I need to use a tripod or is there something else I should do. Pointers are welcome.

You don't say what shutter speed you used, but with a monopod I would expect shutter speeds down to about 1/50 sec would be fine despite the 400mm zoom. The f-stop could have been a notch or two lower, giving a lower ISO, but the difference would be marginal. For the shot as shown I would recommend darkening it a little and maybe giving it a touch of contrast or clarity.

Sorry, I shot at 1/20. I have already touched up the shot as best I could in PP.

Hi UTMike, I posted a California moon shot last night because the red tint caused by the fire was interesting.

My settings for the shot (hand held) was:

1/60 sec
f/8
600mm
100 iso

I know the iso seems super low, but it works for me.

I enjoyed your shot, shooting the moon is always fun!

I will never get to be as good as you, Jim, if I do not continue to learn.

Here are couple of hints. use a tripod. Seriously, use a tripod. Put your camera on Manual mode. Set you ISO to 200, the moon is really bright and 200 works well. Set you f/stop to 11. Set your shutter speed to 200th of a second. See what that does for you.

Thanks for the tips. If the California smoke dissipates before the moon goes I will give it a try.
