Have a canon 18-135mm stm, canon 55-250mm,but am looking for another lens 18-300 or 400mm so i do not have to switch lenses as this prevents me from getting certain shots. I am looking at the tamron 18-400mm lens. chief criticisms: a little stiff on zooming, sluggish to focus in the cold, Not for low light at f stop 3.5-6.3 but this is ok with me. Since it is not weather sealed it can suck dust into the interior of body when zooming, Lens a bit slow with 4ti body vs 80d body. A little soft at long end. Also occasional error message that no proper connection to mem card. Other than that buyers have been generally satisfied with the lens quality, image quality etc. I am an amateur hobbyist and not a pro so i do not expect pro quality images (or L quality sharpness. Anyway any comments with those that use this lens. And or suggestions for lenses that exceed tamron"s quality in this focal length range.(sigma etc.) I have the tamron 150-600 g2 and love it.

I've had the Tamron 18-400 since last October and have given it a real workout and am very satisfied with it. It stays on my D7500 95% of the time.

The G2 is a pretty exceptional lens. I've used one (borrowed, to compare to my Sigma Sport) and it is every bit as good, lighter, better at shorter focal lengths, and a lot cheaper. The only lens that might be worth considering that would not be a step down would be the 100-400 Canon current version. In addition to being very sharp even at full zoom, it has really short minimum focus distance, providing some almost macro capability - with a lot of working distance and excellent image quality. It is an L lens so build quality is extremely high. If you are looking for better than what you have, the 18-400 would not qualify.

I am a Nikon shooter, and every time I go out with a friend who shoots with a 100-400 I am jealous of the handling and quality.

Unfortunately for Canon users this range of lens or even close to this range is lacking.
Here is a link discussing the G2 version of the 18-400mm by Tamron with some real world photos and comparison.
It does have IS which is important for the lens in hand holding and being G2 it does not suffer so much the focusing issues the G1 had.

It appears to be a very good and versatile lens and well worth getting for a one lens fits all.
As you know already the Tamron G2 lenses are a major step up from G1 lenses in IQ and build durability.
Glad you love your 150-600mm G2 as I am looking to get my wife one for Christmas it looks like.

I have the Tamron 18-400 on a Nikon and really like it. I don't specialize on anything, just shoot what ever gets my attention and it gives me a lot of options with that range.

I would rent the 18-400 first to see if it is good enough for you. Otherwise, I would dump your 55-250 and get the 70-300 IS II nano - an astounding lens !

If you have a store, take the 18-400 outside and shoot some pictures with it at various distances and lighting. Then Do the same with another lens. I did the Nikon 70-300 VR. I found much better quality in the 70-300 when I got home and looked at the images on my monitor. I use the 70-300 in combination with the latest Tamron 24-70. Most images I shoot are with the Tamron 24-70. I carry the 70-300 with me. This is not a one lens constant carry situation.

You have 2 bodies? Put your 18-135 on one and the 150-600 on the other. Then no need to change lenses. Just carry both and use the one you need at the moment.

just curious how do you lug the 150-600mm when hiking. do you have it mounted on a tripod or pack it into a backpack or whatever. yes i do have two bodies one the canon t4i with 18-135mm attached. And have the 150-600mm with canon 70d attached which i place in a cheap dufflebag and take it out of the trunk of my car when needed. i also have an optech double harness which i can hook up my 150-600m.too. Thanks for your input.

Well, it accepts 5 inches - that's 125mm ! ...irrespective of what some reviewer said ....
