Wow! What a wonderful series! I would love to experience something like that in person, but your photos really captured the essence of the operation. That looks like serious work. Thank you very much for sharing. Great story telling!

Very nice photos! The Amador Co Fair is one of my favorites for this mill and other working machinery demos. Good work, thanks!

Great set of the saw mill and "Crew" - I was 8 yrs old in 45 when my Father ran a sawmill just like this Greenhorn River between Grass Valley and Colefax -only it was powered with a old Packard V12 motor a true 2 person saw mill that was ordered from Sears & Roebucks catalog.

Glad you enjoyed the pics. Another great saw is mill is Sturgeon’s mill, ia 105 year old steam powered sawmill. It is a working museum that is open 4 weekends a year to the general public. On these weekends historians, gear heads, steam heads and students of California history come to “Step back into History” at our museum.

Where is Sturgeon's mill located? I was at the Amador fair and saw this mill working a couple years ago - I live 20 mi above Jackson on #88 this really brought back childhood memories - this mill dad built and ran for the owner of 90 ares of timber still was supplied by men with hand saws and horse/mule teams skidding the logs up to the mill - lots of fun riding them with the teamster.
