What do you do with your non-commercial photographs?

I am interested in how people here use their photographs for their personal use. Obviously a lot of people here shoot lots of pictures for non-commercial reasons. What do you do with yours?

In my case, they are most often shown to others on my 50" TV. All the recent flat screens seem to have USB ports on the back. My pictures are in one of several folders, and the TV controller lets me select the appropriate folder and then put the pictures up on screen. The arrows on the controller advance or back up through the sequence. In some cases, such as a vacation trip, the sequence is important - other shots - no. In any case, this surely beats the old days of the Kodak Carousel! Not to mention having to set up a screen and darkening the room.

I have had a few of my best photos mounted on a 1/4" board. The prints are flush mounted 8X10" and the quality is very good. I order them on line from Costco; they are considerably cheaper than any other on-line source I have found.

A few family photos are printed normally, usually at Wal-Mart, and mounted in conventional frames.

Pretty boring and plain vanilla, right? If this subject has already been beaten to death before I became a regular, I do apologize. I would appreciate knowing what others do.

Cheers

Bob

I put the ones I keep on my Mac, which is backed up in icloud. I also have them all backed up on an external hard drive. I have them sorted accordingly, and am able to easily view them when I want. I have over 10,000, but they’re so well organized it’s a piece of cake to find what I want.

Since I’ve upped my game, I, too, print my best captures at Costco to mount on my walls (anything bigger than an 8x10. 8x10 and smaller I can print myself). As I’ve only got so much wall space for my photos, I rotate them occasionally so I don’t get bored, or when I take a new favorite.

My computer setup includes two monitors. I display the photos that I really like as wall paper on the desktop with a 1 min cycling. This includes not only pictures I take but some NASA pictures.

I have a Squarespace portfolio (url below) whose traffic is steadily increasing. There is a 3' x 4' white board next to my desk, that I display 8½x11 and 13 x 19 high quality prints on archive paper held up by magnets. These I rotate periodically with greatest hits from my last trip. There is a vanity area adjacent to the living room that I have taken over completely for displaying photographs printed on metal (Bay Photo or Mpix) hung gallery style complete with track lighting to highlight the work.

I've tried a slide show on the living room TV, which is 4k, but did not like the way it looks.

Save them on the computer;
Print some as gifts;
Print some to hang in the house;
Post some on Facebook;
Donate some prints;
Display on a digital frame;
KEEP AS MEMORIES.

I do exactly the same thing with my noncommercial photos as my commercial photos. Every photo that I don't delete is backed up to two portable hard drives identified by date, location and subject. For example since commercially I shoot sports photography the file folder for tomorrow will say 07-28-18 Pee Wee Rodeo Crook County Fairgrounds.

I also catalog all photos to lightroom. Photos for my job go to one lightroom catalog photos for pleasure go to a second catalog on a separate hard drive.

Commercially I make a photo book of each state championship by local high school teams for sale. Non-commercially I make photo books of all major vacations or family events.

Commercially I sell 8x10 11x14 11x17 24x36 prints. Non-commercially I print 24x36 posters of some of my favorite photos which are displayed at home. They rotate out approximately every three months to new photos.

Each book whether commercial or not also gets a slide show with all the photos that are in the book.

All books whether done commercially or for fun are available for sale to those who are interested, although since I don't promote the noncommercial books they rarely sell.

Generally my routine is this. (all my photos are non-commerical)

B&W: After development and drying, I sleeve the negs in printfile holders and make a contact sheet. Then when I get time I make prints of any of the shots that I like. B&W is generally for putting up on my corkboard at work or giving to friends who like photography. The printfile holders go in printfile binders sorted by year and date.

Color: I usually shoot color for special occasions; family visits, trips, etc. For those I send to willow labs for developing and printing of 4x6's which get sorted and the keepers go into photo albums or a shoe box. I have the negatives in binders just like the B&W so If I want to make something larger than 4x6 I can.

Never aspired to any commercial goals, so all is non Below is a shot of my "critter wall" - with a live critter supervising. I live in a small apt and this group of frames stays as-is, with the mats also, and I just swap out pics as the mood strikes. If you're on a budget, you might be interested to know that all the picture frames and two of the mirrors came from thrift stores.

#2 - an old window frame was nearly perfect size for a 20x30 poster (still less than $10 to print at Costco, I believe).

With my first dslr I had 4x6's printed of nearly everything I shot. Since much of that was flowers, I eventually gave the bulk to senior citizen centers and nursing homes for their use in craft or card making.

Have you thought about visiting a nursing home and taking your laptop? Looking at pictures is something easy for frail people to do and enjoy and helps stimulate their conversation. It is very rewarding.
You could talk to the activities director and either lead a group discussion or be a friendly visitor for someone who doesn’t have family nearby. If so inclined you could even think about offering to take portraits.

Shutterfly personal websites for most. Facebook for some. Digital Picture frames for pictures of granddaughter. Best of the year pictures are put in a shutterfly book, reducing to less then 30 is hard work.

I just maintain them on my PC and review them when I have time. I print and give away some of people that I think will appreciate them but mostly I take them for my enjoyment.

I print a few select images; most are processed in Lightroom, and never seen again by anybody but me.

Most are shared on social media, some friends ask for prints and some are printed and used in my house, some are entered in local contests. Here is crop of shore birds taken to the local sign shop and printed or clear adhesive vinyl and fix on door transom so its visible from both sides

I store them on my PC in categories and share a few on social media. Some times I go back through them and relive the moments.
