Based on the age of your machine, if I had been to asked at the time whether you should update to Windows 10, I would have suggested that you just carry on with Windows 7. As I indicated earlier, updating operating systems on very old computers is problematic for variety of reasons, even if the Windows 7 version you had was completely up-to-date. This is especially true if as you describe it's been limping along for long time.

The problem occurred from an update, not an upgrade. Microsoft puts out security updates monthly, things go wrong far to often with these updates.

I think what you are suggesting is completely untrue. There are lots of reasons an operating system on an older machine will start to run slow after several years, and none of them are based on planned obsolescence by the vendor.

Just being curious. Just asking. I know nothing about the workings of a computer.

OTOH, read periodic complaints from owners of older version of Iphone that their device running slower since launch of the new version. I don't own an Iphone therefore, no first-hand knowledge.

Thanks for your response.

If your computer is Intel based, download and run the "intel driver and support assistant" to update your Intel drivers. I am responsible for about a dozen machines, and one of them was crashing and rolling back the 1803 update until I used the Intel driver and support assistant to update the Intel graphics driver. Two other laptops installed the 1803 update OK, but kept dropping off of the WiFi until I updated the Intel Wireless adapter driver.

Also, 1803 gets rid of Homegroups (good riddance), but in the process, Microsoft resets a lot of the file sharing settings back to the default, so if you are using file sharing, you will need to turn those setting back to what you want (hope that you made a note of the settings the first time).

That is what I have found so far....

I can't comment on the iPhone. I generally avoid all Apple products for reasons I won't bore you with. However, in general, the grumblings of non technical users in the popular press can lead to the creation urban myths that are then accepted as true by others who are equally unqualified to judge. Once these myths, usually based on misinformation or misinterpretation, are firmly rooted it is difficult to convince many people that they are not true.

Actually the Windows 10 periodic updates rarely go wrong on machines up to the task of receiving them, but if you or someone you know is one of those affected, especially on an ancient computer as in this thread, it can skew your opinion of the whole process.

Running a second gen i7 HP and windows update has twice lost or misplaced system files necessary for operation, one time able to repair with system disk, next time a reinstall was required. Have been working on IT since 69 in R&D. The problem seems to be drivers, in future I plan on updating all drivers before allowing windows to do it's midnight updates.

Antiquated drivers, especially for no longer supported hardware, and ancient software are ALWAYS a potential problems for an operating system upgrade or update. With your experience I'm sure you know that.

The last win 10 update crashed my computer and lost the desktop file. Had to reinstall, this is the second time it has happened.
I partition my main drive to separate as much as possible from the OS partition. That way, if a complete reinstall is necessary, data is safe. Programs are also in their own partition, but do have to be reinstalled due to registry issues. But at least I have a starting point.

Additionally, there is a huge Win10 update coming in the fall. I fully expect a major mess with my client's systems. Win10 is definitely not my favorite operating system.

The Fall Release, available now, was not bad at all. That is probably because I have installed no MicroSoft software other than W10 on my machine. It seemed interminable on my wife's machine which is loaded down with any piece of MS software that she can find. I haven't hit any bugs in the two weeks since I did the update.

I have an older Windows 7 desktop PC that I have upgraded over the years, including Windows 10. The latest update for Windows 10, Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803), caused a serious systems crash and long story short, I had to take it to our local Best Buy Geek Squad for repair. Today is the 5th day that they have been working on it, and the best they can do is go back and install the original Windows 7 and updates, then reinstall all of my data.

Has any one else have this or a similar issue? The Geek Squad claims it is a hardware issue and that they are starting to see a lot of issues with the Windows 10 upgrade on Window 7 machines.

Thank you, Gary

Did you run the Compatibility Checker to insure that all of your h/w is compatible with W10?
