What total SD card total capacity would you recommend?

I know there are many variables that I can't answer. And, of course, each person shoots differently. I would say that I'll take a lot of pictures. (This being a first time there... I don't really know)

I already have a 16G and an 8G. (I loaned my daughter another 8G for her Africa trip on Sat.)

Thanks for your input.

256 K, 2 cards.
Really one never knows.
I would take 2-3 32 gig cards and have plenty.
Or if I can take my lap top just 2 32 gig cards and download every evening or whenever and the extra card is a back-up.
At least that is how I travel. Though I don't do cruises I drive myself or fly then drive.
An Alaska cruise does sound interesting though for the different views it would afford.
Have fun and post.

Get an extra 2 or 16gb (or 32gb) SD cards are so cheap now, it's better to have too much storage than to run out. In my case, I have two cameras with a 16gb SD in each which is more than ample for my usage. I only shoot in Jpeg and at the end of the day the photos are copied to my small netbook (NB copied not moved). This amount of storage was more than enough to last for a 4-week cruise.

We went on a 7 day Alaska cruise, combined with about a week in Seattle area. I bought one 8 gig high speed card for each day and pre labeled them by date. Sometimes I swapped the day’s card to as many as 3 cameras. I found this to be quite useful when I was going through the 6,000 pics upon return. You might want to use 16 g rather than 8, depending on camera characteristics such as RAW or not.

WE recently returned from our second Alaska cruise on a small ship. Each time I shot overt 3,000 images in 14 days. Make certain that you have a system to backup your images each night. I do a double backup with a tablet, a Kingston Mobilite G5, a 1 TB HD and 3 256 GB flash drives. I would suggest that backing up is the most important process, you do not want to lose your images of whales bubble feeding, sea lions or sea otters interacting.

I shot jepg. and took a 32G and almost filled it. But again, I tend to take a LOT of shots. About 500-800 a day. If your shooting RAW, you need a bigger card. It all comes down to how much you shoot. Cards are cheap, my 32G was about $30.00. CHEAP

Do you shot Raw, Raw+Jpeg, etc.
First check the size if the images type you present take, then divide it into 16GB. That will tell you how many pictures you get on a 16GB card. I would plan on 250 images per day. Now you can figure out how many 16GB cards you need. You can convert 32GB or 64GB easily. But get late least one extra card. Check your manual to determine type of card you need then go to Walmart or Amazon.

Take a few SD cards - they're as cheap as chips!

You ought also to take a small storage device and back them up daily. SD cards (and storage devices) do fail !

Enjoy the trip.........I've done Alaska twice. Awesome.

Over the years, I have acquired a number of 8 gb, 16 gb and 32 gb SD cards. When I bought my Canon 5D IV, I bought three 32 gb CF cards. When I go on vacation, I take all of my 32 gb cards for the 5D IV and my 16 gb cards for my G-15. That way I have enough SD cards to use a fresh one each day. It also makes my life easier for cataloging and post processing. Good luck on your Alaska trip. I’ve been there 3 times. Once back in 1952 when I worked there and again in 2003 and 2006 as a tourist.

I guess I am different, I use a 128 GB card is first slot and a 64 GB in my second slot. I have used my camera for years and never had a card go bad. I can't understand why people will purchase such small cards or try and manage a handful of cards. They are not a major expense and it makes things so much easier.

I took a 6 week National Park and family tour and brought my laptop, a 13" MacBook Pro and a 1T external hard drive. Before I left, I set up a folder for each park on the external drive. Then, each day at the end of the day, I downloaded my memory card into the appropriate folder. By doing this, I knew what was on each folder. I also made a vow not to cull photos until I got home. I debated going the SD card route and decided against it because i wanted to avoid the possibility of mixing them up and not being able to remember exactly which was which. I used two 32GB cards. The computer was/is small enough to slip easily into my camera bag with ample room for my camera and 3 lenses and all that goes with that. You will love your cruise! P.S. you (and your fellow travelers) will be happier with a monopod than a tripod.

I change cards every other day. That way if one fails I’ve only lost that part of my trip. I have both 16 and 32 cards. Btw, I download my photos into my iPad mini every night as a backup. You can’t be too careful.

Just got back from 3 weeks. I took 5500 shots. So as they say, it depends. I have a 5DMK4, each RAW file is about 35 mb. That's nearly 200 GB. As it turns out, the actual memory used was closer to 250 GB, as I did some post-processing on some while there, and kept the original. I had a 512 gb card, empty when I started. So, perhaps you will shoot 5000 shots, perhaps far less, maybe more. But if I were going I would take 3-128 GB cards as a minimum. You might lose one. In fact, I had actually dropped one on the floor in a bus, so it can happen. Fortunately someone found it. Which speaks for putting your name on the cards too, with indelible ink. This buy the way is if you only have one card slot. If you have two slots, and want to save both in RAW, then you will need a few 128 GB CF cards in addition to the 3-128 SD cards. I save RAW to both, but you can save JPEGs to the CF card if you like.
I also brought my computer, which I am not going to do in the future. I did very little post processing while traveling, and very much worrying about dropping or keeping track of the computer. A small Ipad or equivalent is likely all you need for using the internet if necessary, which in many places is not available even with phone links, as cell phone towers are few and far between.

I take my laptop and a 4tb external WD usb drive. I carry four 64gb SD cards and four 32gb cards for me and 8 32gb memory cards for the wife's Nikon D7000. I use the laptop and Lightroom to upload the images from the cards and get them into a "second" storage location. It also gives me the ability to format and reuse memory cards if necessary. I can generally shoot for 7 to 14 days without having to reformat a memory card but doing it this way gives me options and a backup. When I get home, I can reupload all of my photos to my desktop Lightroom and then do serious work. The laptop is okay but it mainly lets me see my shots in a screen larger than the back of the camera. It also gets ALL of my images into another spot in case of problems. I also can upload everything from my laptop to my WD-Cloud drive back home via internet.... if available and reasonable. The upload to my WD-Cloud is the first thing that happens when I get back to port and a hotel/motel room with wi-fi so that I have ALL of my images in a safe place away from travel.

you're going on a 7 day cruise to Alaska; you can afford to buy 3 or 4 32 GB cards. They're cheap, light weight, and don't take up much space.

At least 3, 32 gb cards class 10. What if one goes bad or you loose one.
