A bit more hype from Nikon,

In anticipation of Nikon’s introduction of the next generation full-frame Mirrorless camera and NIKKOR lenses, we invite you to join us live from Tokyo on August 23, 2018 at 12am ET (9pm PT) for a special live streaming presentation about the future of optics and imaging.

Bla, bla, bla. Will never purchase a Nikon mirrorless. The body and lenses will be cost prohibitive.

Not only that, but you have to use an adapter if you have a bunch of D, G or E lenses. I will not be purchasing one either.

The popular Nikon "F" Mount, in existence for many decades. Going mirrorless in some cases does require a mount change. Sony went from "A" mount to "E" to accommodate their mirrorless cameras. Sony has lens mounts adapters too. I assume this Nikon adapter won't be cheap either. Sony still produces lenses in "A" mount and "E" mounts. But, are concentrating mostly on "E" mount production.

I wonder what introducing a Nikon mirrorless will do to the pricing of their DSLR's?

Oh, I hope I know the answer! Lower DSLR prices for DX and lower level FF lines.

But do Nikon and Canon think they can maintain separate lines of pro-quality mirrorless and DSLRs, as well as APS and bridge camera lines? Unless you're creating some new market segment there, some lines' sales will have to suffer. There are only so many consumers out there with a thirst for cameras with four digit prices, especially given the incredible improvements in phone cameras over the past few years. Support costs a lot of money, and my biggest fear is that my somewhat older, somewhat less expensive DSLR / APS system will become one of the orphans.

True, but they serve multiple purposes - most everyone NEEDS a phone. And of course the major Cellular providers will finance them as a part of the cellular plan. It's Henry Ford level genius, IMHO.

But your DSLR will not stop working when Nikon releases its mirrorless cameras.

True. My Contax is still working, even though Zeiss no longer supports anything built while Hitler was in power. It's getting things serviced that might get dicey if Nikon quits servicing and supporting older models. Digital servicing requires more than the watchmaker's tools and skill set of the film generations. That's one of the very few things about our present digital age that displeases me - more planned and inevitable obsolescence.

Get a new service provider, maybe? My daughter seems to get a new phone every year and my cell bill doesn't seem to grow. Of course my own cell phone dates to 2010! My friend in the industry say that it's the Gillette business model - "I don't sell razors, I sell blades".

It will probably push the price of everything down, including the D850, especially before the holiday season - late fall+. Since the introduction of the D850 I noticed used prices for the D810 have come down a bit on eBay.
