I have just returned from a 10 day family vacation to Scotland and wanted to share the first of what I hope are many shots that I like from the volume of pictures that I took. All three were taken with a Nikon D7100 and a Tokina 20-35mm f/3.5 - 4.5. I found that photography in Scotland is difficult for two reasons

(1) everything (and I mean everything) is just begging to be photographed as it is such a beautiful place, so choosing compositions and subjects was a struggle for me. I could have taken 10,000 shots and still missed beautiful scenes.

(2) there are people everywhere, and I had to get creative to avoid throngs of them in my photos (unless you can wait them out which I could not), which means I compromised between the composition that I wanted and what I actually shot in many of my captures. The second image in this set is an example of that compromise - the Ross Fountain was surrounded by people but I really liked the background of the castle.

I hope you enjoy.

Outstanding captures! Edinburgh is one of my favorite places in the world, spent a couple years near there and visited many times. What I enjoy most about your photos is you were there on a sunny day and hopefully many more came along with that one.
Been thinking about Edinburgh since seeing your post and trying to figure out a relative time frame when I was there. Finally came up with a milepost - I attended the opening of the Firth of Forth bridge. Most highway structures in the US are built to last 50 years, wonder how that one is doing at age 55?

You done well to compose round these people, Edinburgh is always bustling with people, really busy during the fringe, and it is a photographers paradise, lots of hidden gems in and about the old town, i take it for granted as im only 12 miles from Edinburgh city centre, but i couldnt imagine living outwith Scotland, but plenty sights for photographers to spend a lifetime shooting

Beautiful pictures. I visited the castle in 2009. My wife still hasn't forgiven me for parking at the bottom of the hill.

Thanks for the comments! We stayed right next to the "old" Firth of Fourth bridge for a few nights... the newest is quite a bridge. Amazingly, it rained only one of ten days that we were there, despite the forecast of rain most of the time. This was our first visit but we will be back.

Thanks for the comment therwol! We did an astounding amount of walking in the 10 days we were there. Especially at the castles we visited... Edinburgh, Dunrobin, Stirling, and Doune.
