On September 29-30th, the Union Pacific will continue its 150th anniversary in Sacramento, CA, at the California State Railroad Museum and adjacent Sacramento Southern Railroad. Admission to the museum and excursion rides will be free. One of the featured pieces of rolling stock will be UP's famous #844 locomotive; unless plans change, the Challenger locomotive will not be there. In addition, several pieces of museum and SSRR stock are undergoing major refurbishment. All are welcome. Please note that tripods are not allowed in the museum or on railway stock; monopods are permitted. Please mark your calendars for this historic event!

I have shot UP/SP Calif RR museum but am not familiar with the Sacramento Southern but know of the RR and part of it's routs.
Where is it located - in Old Sac. also.
Have you shot the Western RR museum east of Fairfield on Hwy 12? Great old electric trains & trollies.
Your avitar brings great memories to mind. As a young boy living in Virginia City in '41 the train still ran in VC & Gold Hill our house was on the hill above the mouth of the tunnel across the tracks from the 2 churches. - Dad was one of the miners who rode in the open cars to & from work in Gold Hill.
Dang I'm telling my age again.

The SSRR is the line from the old shops north of Sacramento officially to Isleton, but the excursion train runs roundtrip fron the depot on Front Street south to Bath, a one way trip of approximately three niles, with a "run-around" at the south terminus to move the locomotive from the south end of the train to the north end. To many, this switching sequence is the high point of the trip. The round trip takes about 40 minutes. We usually have two 1921-23 coach cars, two 1917 open-air gondolas and a first-class observation car (extra fare). Our normal locomotive is a 1942 oil-fired 0-6-0 steam locomotive, but is in the shop at this time, ard we are running a small diesel switcher.
As to the Challenger, it is generally considerer to be the third largest mainline locomotive, with our AC-12 #4294 cab-forward the fourth largest.
I haven't been to the WP museum yet.

Thanks, sounds like a great opportunity.
I'm scheduled to be in LA the last week of September and in the Boston area the first week of October. My timing could not be worse. :-(

Hi Bill
I'm not into trains that much but when I went on Holiday to the South Island of New Zealand there is an old loco we call the Kingston flyer - Kingston is the town it lives in. Thought you might appreciate the pic - this pic was taken on it's last voyage a couple of years ago. About 6 months ago some retired gentleman bought the Kingston Flyer and has restored it to it's former glory - It is once again doing the tourist thing daily for about a 1 hr trip each way. I also have a few pics of inside the carriages if you want to see them. The pic of this loco is a low res one; can supply a high res if you wish.

Well, you could get pictures of planes, strip searches, officially-permitted groping, screaming babies. I actually used to enjoy flying. :D

Yes, me too. I don't anymore. We are treated like cattle.

Heck, I recall when I avoided Southwest Airlines, or the "Cattle Car" as we used to call it.
Whenever standing in line with other businessmen in suits it only took one individual to quietly say "moo" to get almost everyone mooing out loud.

Not anymore.
Southwest has not changed, but they are now one of the best airlines (along with Alaska) to fly on today in the US. It's sad.
We have sure come a long way, but in the wrong direction.

I have to admit that I have never had a bad experience - one of those "hell" situations, but there are so many of them that I'd rather drive. When they started charging for various types of luggage and not giving us food, that pushed me over the edge. Pushing the pilots to their limits - and beyond - and cutting their pay does not inspire confidence.

Your right. I use to like to fly. But when they toke my wings away and I had to let someone else do the flying then became boring.

Just like driving a car. I could drive for 24 hrs straight, but if someone else is behind the wheel, it's no fun at all.

I am remembering a great train ride in '50 from Davis,CA to Wallace, ID - the Shasta Daylight - the trip thru the Caskades was fantastic -lots of nondescript sceanery thru some of OR & WA but then the 85 mi from Spokane, WA to Wallace, ID was something else - Lakes, rivers & mountains fantastic.

Are you suggesting that I derailed this thread? It was never my intention to switch topics. I have no ties to the RR industry, so it doesn't matter how you travel. With any luck, we will be able to get the original topic going full steam ahead. :D
