European settlement of Yorke Peninsula in South Australia began around the middle of the 19th century. The area soon developed a reputation for the production of high quality grains including wheat and malting barley. Besides agriculture and aquaculture, active industries include the production of salt, dolomite, limestone and sand mining. Gypsum was also mined for about 70 years with most of it being processed on site into plaster of Paris and cement. With no rail network on the peninsula many of the small towns along the coast developed port facilities to cater for ketches, schooners and other small sailing vessels bringing in supplies and taking out produce and minerals. Eventually shipping by sea gave way to road transport as suitable heavy vehicles were developed and roads improved. The coastal towns now thrive on tourists and recreational fishing and it is not unusual during the Easter and Christmas holiday periods to see a steady stream of traffic making the two hour journey from Adelaide to various parts of the peninsula. My wife and I spent four enjoyable weeks exploring Yorke Peninsula in March this year (2018).
