Hi! I am a new member and this is my first post so please bear with me 😊 I have just purchased a Sigma 105mm lens for macro which I love but it has been a real learning curve for me. Practice, practice, practice,, But the question I have is there a better way to focus in on your subject ( mostly flowers). I constantly readjust my ball head on my tripod and even then it tends to drift,, I have seen a gear called a focusing rail,, do they work really well? Or do I need a pan and tilt head on my tripod?? My tripod is a befree manfotto tripod with a quick release vs Arca-Swiss Mount. Or the problem I am having just part of shooting macro?? Thanks!!

Check with kpmac who frequently posts great macro work on this site. I am sure he would respond to a private message.

Welcome to the fantastically interesting world of macro/close-up photography - speaking for myself I found the simple inexpensive 4 way focusing rail https://www.amazon.com/SHOOT-Aluminum-Focusing-Close-up-Photography/dp/B01N0KNK69/ref=sr_1_1?s=dmusic&ie=UTF8&qid=1532446008&sr=8-1&keywords=4+way+focusing+rail my best friend when I started macro. This along with a pistol grip ball head and my super sturdy tripod with a crank up/down center post give me the minute changes in all direction that are often needed in my macro shots.

Welcome to the Hog. Macro is very addicting. It just takes patience and practice. I shoot mainly handheld and find that moving back and forth rather than refocusing really helps. PM me if I can help in any way.

It does sound like your first obstacle is an inadequate ball head and tripod. The Befree is a lightweight travel tripod and is really intended for very light cameras shooting travel images low magnification or with wider angle lenses. Your needs for high magnification work will be better served with something more substantial.

For all of my closeup and macro work I use an Arca-Swiss Z1 ball head. I can lock the camera in place, or just leave enough friction on it so I can move it with my hand, yet when I let it go it stays put.
