I am looking for advise. I am not a professional. I currently have a D7000 and wife has a Cannon 7II.
She is more of a looking for the perfect or best picture when we travel and I more of a snap and click , I have decided to slow down and take better and fewer pics while traveling.
Now here is the issue , I want a Nikon D5 and Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II lense , she wants me to buy a Sony A9 body and lenses .
Any advise . And I take pictures of whatever . I am in the repo business . And take a few hundred pics a day of all kinds of stuff , in both low light and sunshine . Been using phone camera , but want to use new camera for work , to justify the cost

The D7000 is a great camera. I am a Nikon man, so I can't offer any information on Canon products. I would say your most practical move would be to consolidate to one brand or the other so you can share lenses. They both make excellent equipment. Your shooting style sounds like you might do well with a 'bridge' camera. That is something like he Nikon P series or a canon equivalent. These cameras have a wide zoom range and if you watch the photos posted on this web site you will find pics taken by members with this style of camera and they are very good. That type of camera might also accommodate our need for quick access and portability.

Your wife's Canon is a nice camera for sports and wildlife with its 10 frames per second but it is getting a bit long on the tooth. Time for the 7D III to hit the streets. The D5 is an excellent camera but it is big heavy and built like a tank. It is a true workhorse of a camera but it is also very expensive. If you have a good selection of Nikon lenses and a fairly deep pocket I'd say go for the D5. I wouldn't limit myself with a single prime lens though. As for the Sony, great camera but it won't hold up like the Nikon.
If you want to share lenses with the wife there's also the Canon 1DX II. A wee bit less expensive than the Nikon but every bit as much a workhorse and in some aspects even better. Having the same make as your wife will let you share accessories and like I said, lenses.

I'll step outside the box here and suggest that both you and your wife have the same brand of camera. That allows you to trade lenses and other equipment back and forth so you don't need to buy two of everything because your equipment and her's are not compatible with each other.

A big consideration is if you want an optical viewfinder (Nikon D5) or electronic viewfinder (Sony A9). The D5 is an outstanding pro camera but it's a beast at 3.11 lbs. You could have the pro-build D500. It weighs 1.89 lbs. I have one. It has the same autofocus system as the D5.

I have to ask why you want a fixed 200mm lens for taking pictures of all kinds of stuff. If you're in the repo business you probably have to take photos of cars. You might have to stand way back to get an entire car in the frame with a 200mm lens. Another factor is the weight. The D5 plus 200mm f/2 is 9.57 lbs. You'll be working out like a body builder if you're taking hundreds of pics a day.

I was looking at that lense because , a friend showed me his and he said had used it on some pictures I liked . I am a amateur, who wants to do better.
My wife has agreed to Nikon now , I have more lenses for Nikon.
I was looking at the D5 because itnis supposed to be a very sturdy camera . I will be using it for pleasure. But more for work. We get anywhere from watches to big boy toys and properties . So need a good all around camera. This will be just my third camera in over 25 years. So want something that will last.
Thanks for the advise

And I will never get close enough to repo a car , that is what I have employees for .
As the business has changed . The lenders are asking for better pictures of the merchandise and more of them.

The D5 is overkill as is the 200mm lens, I would get two nikon bodies, D500 or D750 unless you want high res then a D850. I would personally go full frame so D750 or D850. Then get the f/2.8 zooms, 24-70mm and 70-200mm and if you can afford it the 14-24mm, you might want 2 of the 24-70mm as on holiday you both might want it at the same time.

In reality I went for the 24-85mm f/2.8-4 because it is a lot lighter and a D810 and Df for cameras.

If you go for the D500, remember it is a crop sensor so you are loosing the wide angle end so go for something like the Nikon AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G.

This article might be interesting but update the body to D850. http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2013/09/05/the-nikon-d800-and-the-holy-trinity-of-lenses-by-valerio-trigari/

$5700 for the lens that is limited in its use, no to mention the weight, and a $6500 camera. Really, you use your phone camera and now want a $12,200 outfit to shoot what exactly?
I would call that a light year jump from a D7000 to a D5 with 200 F2. If you plan night surveillance on repo customers then OK, this outfit is for you.
I believe you may either have too much money or maybe not enough gray matter, one or both may be an issue.
Anyway, IMHO, I believe this outfit will not serve and purpose beside bragging rights and not deliver what you want.
I would instead invest in a D850 with the following lens recommendations, the Nikon 24-120 f4, the Nikon 70-200 FL 2.8, and if you want to do surveillance I would recommend either the 200-500 or the 180-400 FL.
But, regardless, the D5 and 200 F2, really? Your serious? I just think it is a waste of money for you, but, like I said, if you want bragging rights, go for it. It would be able to take shots in single match lighting for sure.

The D5 is a great camera. Since you made the lens decision being the only one who knows what other Nikon lenses you have, nobody can really say if it is a good or bad choice.

Many here will tell you to base your decision on $$$ because that is what they do. My opinion is if you can afford it and still put food on the table, go for it.

I personally like wide aperture primes and recently got rid of a 200 - 400 F/4.0 zoom in favor of a 400mm F/2.8. I have no regrets. I just put a little less food on the table.

The D5 could possibly change your shooting style but your images are not going to be any better. Buy the lens you want but if I were you I would keep the D7000.
Remember, it is not the camera or lens, it is the photographer.
