Waiting on the train, mud/rock slide and big traffic delay.

On Tuesday, 17th, I drove to Rockwood to catch images of the Durango & Silverton trains returning from Silverton.
The first of the two trains beat me to Rockwood. So I waited for the second train which should be about 45 minutes later.
With dark clouds, lightening and rain, I gave up and left early.
I drove pass the railroad underpass at Hwy 550. About1/4 -1/2 mile farther, I came upon a rock/mud/water slide rushing over the road. I was about the 5th vehicle back.
I got this one shot of the debris rushing over the road. It was raining and shot thru the windshield.
It was really, moving fast.
There is a second part to this.

Run off was coming down close to the parked cars. The emergency people had us move back up the road.
As I passed the railroad underpass, I could see of lot of water/mud flowing over the tracks.
I parked at the next county road. A law enforcement officer at the intersection, lights on and stopping traffic from passing south.
In a little bit, two snow snowplows and one front end loader came from the north to clean up the mess.
Didn’t know it at the time, was more mud on the road farther down the hwy.
After about 3 hours of sitting, the highway patrol was escorting all of Durango/Silverton buses, a coupled of school buses and other buses. They turned at the county road headed towards the railroad tracks. That train had about 400 riders.
After another 20 minutes. We were escorted thru the cleared debris. The road was still muddy.
The next day, Jinx & I drove up to Rockwood and found the locomotive/train parked. Where the rocks/mud slide was, we found rocks as big as 2 feet in diameter laying in the bar ditches.
We read in the paper the train may not run for the next two days as cleanup and track repairs were made.
The train did run on Friday, the day we moved to Chama.
Really, put a cramp in the images I wanted to capture. Well, maybe next year.

That is just way too bad. The D&S (I feel real bad for the employees)has had more than its share of hard luck this year.

Unfortunately there has been more flooding and mud/rock slides. One set of (drone)images I saw showed what looked to be a major loss of fill on the side of a steep incline. That could take an extended period to repair. I hope I'm wrong.
