If you really want to downsize I would opt for a competent compact camera rather than for a bridge camera--otherwise you might as well take along your D610. I would opt for a one-inch sensor for the image quality. I also would advise you to get a decent zoom range. I think that you will want a decent telephoto range in Machu Picchu. There are lots of interesting features at a distance--I definitely made use of my telephoto lens there. You may not find all of that for under $350--but then you are spending a lot more than that on your trip. Machu Picchu and Galapagos are once-in-a-lifetime locations so I would bring a camera that rises to the occasion. What comes to mind is Panasonic Lumix ZS200 or ZS100 or one of the six models of the Sony RX100. The Canon G7 X and G9 X have great image quality but do not have a superb zoom range (I own the G9 X and love its IQ and smallness). The Canon PowerShot SX730 HS has a very long zoom lens but a small sensor.

I checked the SX730 which has a shorter zoom and can't shoot raw and not 4K video and photo; the only advantage could be water-proof.

Basically, I am looking for a wildlife camera per visits to Galapagos and Panama City
I was told you'd never find a too long lens for birds.
The FZ80 fits very much to my budget and usage; I will check against the FZ1000 for comparison

FZ1000 has a 16x zoom and almost 3 years older model, other feature about the same but ask for more money.

As you already know Nikon with your D610, why not take a look at the Nikon B700?? I find it to be a fine camera.

the Nikon features about the same as FZ80 but more expensive

The cameras you mentioned are bridge cameras, they are generally much bigger than point & shoot cameras. I don't have any experience with the Lumix but have read positive reviews about it.

Thank you for helping clarify the discussion with this post. Almost every digital camera has some sort of "point and shoot" setting (or settings) making the term (p&s) quite vague.

It is your preference to choose which advantage is more important.
But for the 4K capability, touch-screen, external flash and about $100 cheaper, I picked the FZ80

I just noticed you chose to buy the FZ80. It has many great features and a great price.

With the Nikon 610, you may want to buy the Nikon 28-300 and leave everything else home. It is a solid performer and will generally give you images nicer than a point and shoot. Otherwise, I would set a price and look at Panasonic, Canon, and Sony (and the new Nikon P1000 if it is available before you fly). Head over to DpReview and read over their recommended cameras. I took phenomenal Machu Picchu shots with a plain vanilla $300 P&S Canon 7 yrs ago. I was shocked at the great quality of my pictures. It has only gotten better. We were doing humanitarian work in small towns and simply couldn’t risk traveling with anything of value. I was sad about leaving my Nikon 300S at home, but got great shots anyway. Have fun. What a great trip.

Your point; "....simply couldn’t risk traveling with anything of value.", is very worthy of thoughtful consideration, in any type of travel: "risk".

Thank you for your suggestion
The Sony is over 4 times pricier, without 4K photo and post focus and much narrower zoom range; but advantages are the articulating screen, 1" Senor and higher ISO.
For wide life shooting, the Sony is very much limited; probably very good for street, portrait and family photo.

Thank you for suggesting. I checked the 28-300 which cost around $600 in Amazon.
I need a longer zoom for wildlife in Galapagos and Panama City, therefore I ordered the fz80 for $270.

I am quite excited by its features such as 4K photo and post focus, which I think it is very feasible for including myself with the scenery.

I think my D610 with 24-85 should take better pictures within its range.
