I was just about to turn 19. I went down to the Cape to see the launch of Apollo 11. What a THRILL!!! At the time, I was also involved in amateur rocketry and so that was a very special time for me. Later I was able to visit the Cape and see the launch of Apollo 16 and 17. And, I was able visit the "viewing area" and witness the launch of the first Space Shuttle.

In late December of 1968 I was on a night patrol in the foothills east of Chu Lia Vietnam Nam. We had set up an ambush on a Viet Cong trail. I was the radioman on the team and after about an hour of sitting still and silent I heard very low break of an incoming radio call. My call sign was Zulu 1. Radio communications for the night was Zulu.

“Zulu 1, Zulu 1... Zulu over” I replied with the barest whisper: “Zulu, Zulu, Zulu 1, over”... “Zulu 1, look at the moon, over”

Now sitting in ambush at the edge of a rice paddy, expecting enemy troops at anytime is not the place where you want to receive a radio message... espically when all the frogs around instantly go quite with the slightest sound; a deadly give away you’re there to any nighttime patrol scout!... “Zulu, say again your last, over”... “Zulu 1, look at the moon, they’re circling the moon right now! Zulu out”

I sat there half in and half out of the water looking at the moon and the bizarre circumstances of the two realities. It took another 15 minutes for the frogs to start up their chirping again. The sudden deafening silence of the frogs is still my worst nightmare.
