After you signed up for the various forums, you will get all those under Newest Topics that you signed up for. No email confirmation.

I logged in and then, saved the site.
When I click on the UHH link, it opens up with me already logged in.

A lot of members (including me) open up the UHH and click on the "Newest Topics" at the top of the page.
The contents that show up are the new posts in the basic forums and the forums you subscribe to.
The news digest is only a partial list of the newest topics.
When looking at the newest topics, you will see a list that starts out with "New Topic".
If you read all of those, you can click "Mark all topics as read" at the top of the list.
When you check in again, you can repeat.

If you post a comment, you will be automatically subscribed to that topic. So, anytime someone adds a comment, you will get an email notification.
If you want to follow a topic, look at the top of the topic and click on "Watch".
When you decide you are not interested in the topic anymore, look at the top of the topic and click on "unwatch". You will not receive anymore notifications.
Many of your watched topics will become inactive. They are still in your watched topics. You may want to unsubscribe from inactive topics in your watched topics list. You can only unsubscribe from one topic at a time.
