Thank you folks for the extensive and practical suggestions relative to my 50mm lens/portrait project. One thing I should have included for consideration is the fact I may be using (partially) light boxes made by Cowboy Studio (incidentally these are a major pain to assemble!). Discussing light and composition setups with my photo subject, we are striving to use ambient light as much as possible, but light boxes used sparingly may help us obtain some “moody” images. Have any of you used these boxes in your work? Thank you again for your advice; it is greatly appreciated!

Use either artificial ambient light or strobes. Mixing light sources will give you all sorts of color balance problems. Hovever, daylight does mix fairly well with strobe light

I have a really cheap brella box from Cowboy Studios and it is a snap to set up. It is just like opening an umbrella, it just takes a second and you just add a front diffuser, about another 20 seconds and you're done! It has a zipper in the bottom, so the flash lights the back (just like the Apollos)! The quality is decend, I'm happy with it! The size is 30"! I paid 24 bucks for it!

I have the Cowboy Studio four softbox 160 watt light setup with 10-ft. backdrop that I have used for several years now. I paid less than $500 for the entire setup which gave me a complete studio setup. I totally agree with you that putting the softboxes together is a PAIN in the butt. I use it for our Corporate Events and each year we would do employee photos for our use and for the employee's personal use which they enjoyed having.

I believe that Cowboy Studio provides hobbyist level equipment and they do offer some higher end items also. The lighting has never let me down or faltered in any way and given the choice, I would not hesitate to buy it again.

I'm going to wing it. . . .I've read the comments and pages of advice that were directed my way and for those I am most appreciative, yours included. If the photos turn out admirably, I'll be shocked (but very happy), and I know my "client" will, too. I am approaching the shoot date of September 21 with great eagerness on one hand and sheer dread on the other, if that makes any sense. I have lately taken an extremely negative view of what I do photographically and am trying my best to snap out of it, shake this dread, and move on in the gifts I feel I've been blessed with. I think a lot of my struggle was a weekend visit to a photography studio in a nearby city to view some wilderness and nature shots that were totally overwhelming. The creator is beyond good, he's world class and during a Q&A afterward of general photography questions, I clammed up, didn't ask a couple questions I had in mind, and got out of there as quickly as I reasonably and politely could (I was with a group). Why I feel this intimidated I have no idea, but it's my struggle and I will deal with as best I can.
