I love this shot of children playing among the autumn leaves in the park. I have no idea who these children are, snapping the photo while looking for white-tailed kites in the surrounding trees.

Please do not take this the wrong way but taking photos of children that you don't know and posting on the net may be a NO NO . I am not a lawyer just giving you a heads up on a possible problem area. Saying hello from Pittsburgh.

I thought long and hard before posting this because of that very issue. First, I don't think TAKING a picture in a public place is unlawful. Second, I looked at the photo to decide whether the children were "identifiable" in this picture. Hat brims, profiles, and nothing to identify where it was taken...I decided to take a chance. I didn't do it thoughtlessly...but I found the grouping to be so warm and charming and given what I thought were non-identifiable subjects, I went ahead. I've seen a lot of children images in UHH...especially from sports events...and while many of them are photos submitted by relatives, many of the photos show multiple children and I doubt all of the parents of the children shown in the photos were asked for releases or permission. Anyone else feel this photo should be taken down? This is probably a good topic to be discussed.

When I took a class in basic digital photography, one of the points our teacher emphasized was, unless you are the parent, guardian, caretaker of a child/children, do not take picture of them even in public. Ask permission first from the parent(s) or adult supervising the child or children. My experience is, almost 100% of them grant permission. In fact, some even do it with a smile. You don't want to do some explaining to the police, if someone reports a "suspicious character taking picture(s) of children."

Once I was by the lake just taking pictures of the view on a clear, sunny day. A girl, may be about 7 years old, excitedly ran toward me and asked that I take a picture of her. (Must be the long lens sticking out that attracted her.) She was with her uncle and aunt at that time (they said so). I asked them if it's OK and both said, "yes." I took a few photos which made her very happy. Upon their request, I sent them copy of the photos to the e-mail address they gave me. They responded, "Thank you very much."

If adult, no need to ask their permission as long as it's in a public place. But, if you want to be polite about it especially if you're in another country, then do so. Or, take picture of your subject subtly from a distance using a longer lens.

Just my 2 cents. Disclaimer: I am no lawyer either.

It's a wonderful capture in beautiful light. How I wish the world had less need to feel twitchy about such a charming scene. The children really are not identifiable to anyone who doesn't already know them and I can tell that your intention was to present a candid anonymous image. Well done.
