Lining up four grandsons from 3-8 for a portrait. It's like photographing jumping beans.

They've been doing that. This was supposed to be the family type picture.

Offer them ice cream cones if they stay still for five pictures.

Use a fast shutter speed and get some realistic shots with then in action. Years from now you’ll have great memories

Don’t line them up, have them interact. The pictures will be much more interesting.

At my wedding, with lots of young family members around, the photographer did things like have a clown nose, stand on her head (with camera remote on a tripod, mind you), used a squeaky toy, all to get the kids' attention. She had the camera set and ready, and fired as they all looked at her. She got some great shots!

I still have nightmares from over 30 years of doing professional family portraits.
I remember well one doctors family portrait, 7 kids, two dogs, 2 sets of grandparents and mom and dad for a total of 15. I took over 120 images in 5 different locations lasting most of the afternoon. (relax, I was well paid)
Delivered the images, they had them for over 2 months (they had to send proofs to grandparents for their input) got the order (was a very nice order), anyway, the shot they choose for the 20X30 was no surprise to me, it was the shot, out of 120 images, that both dogs had their best expression. So much for professional work, I am glad to be retired and doing one man shows, sure beats what I did for a particle living.

Wouldn't you know, the best shot I got of the kids had a streak of light coming through the trees streaking down one grandson's t-shirt. In another it was on his nose. One had the 7 year old rolling his eyes back into his head.

First time I did a family portrait with my daughter's four kids and their family I accidentally set it in burst mode, giving me 7 pictures for each click. Paging through the photos gives me an amusing look at all the little ones squirming,

You'll probably need straight jackets so shoot from the neck up.

I feel your pain! At the urging of the rest of the family, I tried the same photo, except there were ten of them (8 boys and two girls). Finally got them all in a tree with low hanging branches. Its hanging on the wall yet today! (And my scanner is broken or I would post it!)
