I was looking at the 77D and the 80D, from what I can tell the shutter speeds are faster and the iso can go higher on the 80D. They have improved on the weather sealing on the 80D but I believe that is all they changed. There are several reviews on google comparing the two cameras. Im leaning more toward the 80D but still havnt made the purchase.

77D is what would have been the T6s if they hadn't change the model number format. The 80D is more than a little cut above.

I as choosing between the 80D and the 77D. I was set on buying the 80D. I chose the 77D for these reasons:
It is 11 ounces lighter than the 80D. This is accomplished, largely, by using a smaller (Rebel sized" Battery (the batteries outlast me and I have two). The Penta Mirror vs. a Prism in the viewfinder. The Prism yields a brighter image, I couldn't and can't tell the difference FOR ME. The 80D body is more robust and has some weather sealing.

The fastest Shutter speed on the 80D is 1/8000 sec instead of 1/4000 sec. I've had cameras with 1/8000 sec. shutter. Unless you're into special circumstances, the 1/8000 is rarely used --even when I had it. From what I can tell those are the differences--and I've used Canon EOS cameras for a long time.

What is the same, and from my view, the things that matter for making photographs are:
24 Megapixel Sensor--the same as the 80D and the T7i and the Sl2 and M5, and others.
The in camera Processor that controls image quality and ISO is the latest DIGIC 7, same as the 80D and the others.
For video and Live View, the Dual Pixel AF is the same and is touted as the most advanced and a must.
The 77D has a top screen and back wheel control which is more like the controls I'm used to in the previous XXD vs Rebel cameras.
The Screen is large and I believe identical. It provides all the same touch screen functions, and it is easy to configure and control.
The wifi, Blue Tooth and Near Field wireless capabilities re the same. The Canon App on Apple or Android smartphones make for a very fully featured remote--including the dual pixel AF, and ability to change focus and exposure on the phone screen without touching the camera.

And my only disappointment is they lowered the price by $150, I think after I bought it. I am certainly the guy who would have gone for the 80D. I couldn't figure out who the 77D was for until I ws shopping, and was serious about weight, and I found out it was for ME.

I recommend that you get all of these cameras in your hands, compare it with the T7i and the 80D and truly evaluate the differences. Any one single thing can make you HATE a camera, because using it is very personal and body connected with hands, and eye and face. For me, I found that I was leaving my camera home because it was too heavy. Problem solved for ME with the 77D the best of both worlds.

I have a 77D and am very pleased with the camera. The auto focus system on the camera is excellent. Low light performance is also improved over previously released models, including the 80D. It is a bit smaller and lighter than the 80D, the smaller size appealed to me. Weather sealing and a slightly larger viewfinder found in the 80D were not important to me. I agree with some of the previous comments in the thread. The T7i, 77D and 80D are all great cameras. You'll have to compare and decide what features are the most important to you. The value of the 77D right now during the Canon sale is outstanding! Like Photocraig, I purchased my 77D several months before the current sale, and paid a lot more. I don't expect that the current prices will last much longer.

The native ISO is actually rated higher on the 77D. The 77D has a native ISO up to 25600 expandable to 51200. The 80D only has a native ISO of up to 16000, expandable to 25600.

The 77D is basically the top of the line in Canon's Rebel series even though they changed the nomenclature. It's a danged fine camera and I personally like the smaller size when compared to the other "D style cameras. However, it does have a penta-mirror in the viewfinder rather than a true prism and I don't think the overall build is nearly as good as the 80D on up. The 80D is only slightly bigger in physical size and is supposed to be weather sealed to some extent. Frankly, for the difference in price I'd probably go for the 80D unless the smaller size is a really big deal for you. I'd really suggest handling both before making a purchase, but think you'd probably be happy with either one when it comes to performance, etc. Good luck and good shooting to all.

I purchased the 77D primarily to shoot video and low angle landscape photos. Love the auto focus, the adjustable LCD screen and the fact the camera accepts all of my Canon lens. So far, the 77D has lived up to my expectations.

I bought one when it went on sale a couple of months ago. My purpose was to have a crop frame compliment to my 5D IV that is small, light and inexpensive to take hiking and climbing here in Colorado where weight is a critical factor. I had Rebels previously. Basically what you get here is Rebel size and weight with advanced controls like the higher end cameras. I would say it's exceeded my expectations. Note: I use L glass almost exclusively. Color and contrast are excellent and it will deliver all the clarity you and your lens are capable of. I have been especially impressed with its exposure metering. I often shoot in high intensity, high altitude light where most cameras routinely over expose. The 77D gets it right almost all the time. However, if you shoot a lot in low light, you'll want one of the more expensive models. Images get noisy pretty quick as you raise the ISO. At 649., you can't go wrong.

Lots of info out there....

Note: above states 77D cannot autofocus an f/8 lens/teleconverter combo and 80D at center point only... neither is true. In fact, they use the same 45-point AF system and both can AF an f/8 combo at up to 27 points, depending upon the particular lens. One AF-related difference is that the 80D has Micro Focus Adjustment feature with which the user can fine tune the focus of up to 40 specific lenses to their particular camera, if they wish. The 77D doesn't have that feature.

Another difference that's not noted at those sites is the availability of a vertical/battery grip for the 80D. The BG-E14 is a popular accessory which both doubles the battery capacity of the camera and provides secondary controls along with a comfortable means of holding the camera in "portrait" orientation.

For some reason Canon has not made a battery grip for T7i or 77D. They did for the prior T6s, T6i, T5i, T4i etc. models. There's a relatively inexpensive, third party battery grip being made to fit T7i/77D by Vello, but it uses a rather clumsy external cable to connect the shutter release button and that's the only secondary control it provides. (Other grips such as Canon's BG-E18 for T6i/T6s have controls for autofocus point selection, AE Lock, and more).

I was debating between the 80d and 77d. I went with the 77d at 649.00. Replaced a t5i for me so that is mainly what I can compare it to. Seems to be a much better camera than the t5i much faster. More focus points. Main reason I went with 77d is because the camera store guy at my local store recommended it. I am sure the 80d is a better camera but for me the 77d is just the ticket I needed. Also updated from the canon 100-400L original version to the new 100-400iiL lens. Really liking that lens too. Don’t regret my choice but I MIGHT update to a 90d later on and keep this as a backup but I really doubt it. The 77d does everything I need it to do. Camera store guy said low light capability was betted than the 80d. Somehow I don’t really see that.
