F2 Powerboat Grand Prix - Aalborg, Denmark

The F2 Powerboat Grand Prix which was run in the Limfjord waterway in Aalborg, Denmark. The Grand Prix is part of the F2 Powerboat World Championship of 2018. The waters were rough, so cutting the corner around buoys was challenging. A blue motorboat capsized on one of the turns and they cancelled the race. Reminded me of the Indianapolis 500 - only on water.

Thanks, I've never seen F2 Powerboats before. I wouldn't want to be the last boat with the spray that the ones in front would kick up.

It always amazes me how these boats can snap and hold the tight turns at the end of a straightaway. That said, I still enjoy watching the inboard hydro classes more than the F-class boats. You did a really good job of capturing these boats at speed.

It amazing that a boat can travel up to 200mph in rough water without tipping. They are fun to watch. Thanks for your comment.

These buys have power motor tilting mechanisms that can be adjusted when underway. When the engine is tipped down and the nose of the boat can grab hold of the water in a turn, some of these boats can pull up to 4 g lateral turning force. Then it's back up with the engine so that almost none of the boat is touching the high drag water for the straightaway legs of the course. If you adjust the nose too high, you blow over, too low and your'e slow

Photgereralist - thanks for that info. I looked back at my pics and it looks like the boats going around the buoys are stable - not titling like a motorcycle going around a turn. I also saw your point about the bow having to be out of the water...most of the boats seemed to have the bows up about the same degree. Thanks for your post.

F2's top speed is 120 mph on a long straight run significantly less in actual racing conditions. Still, when combined with amazing acceleration and unbelievable cornering they are the total performance package on water and bested only by F1 powerboats.

The less hull touching the water equates to less drag = more speed. Ideally at top speed only the bottom half of the prop is in the water, the hull functions as a wing and they are literally flying.

Clickerty - I stand corrected. Based on what I've read, the F2-s top speed is only 120mph. When I wrote 200, I think that I was looking at the horsepower of the boats engine. Thanks for the correction. Still impressive!
