Take videos as they tell stories stills cannot, from my experience 4X in Africa. I took 80-400 and 1.4 teleconverter with a D7100. Took off the teleconverter after the first day and never used it again. The 80-400 sucked in dust which attached to the innermost lenses. Seemed to make no difference in photos, but visible when looking in the lens.

I recently took a four week trip to South Africa,Botswana,Zimbabwe and Zambia. Rarely will you be walking around, most of the tours are in a Safari Land Cruiser. The guides get you very close to the animals, at times a bit scary...like 5 feet from a Lion or Leopard. I have a D5300 and took only one lens, Tamron 18-400 that worked very well for me.
Quite true. Some of my friend's shots, esp. of prides of lions (in Kenya) were at a distance. He also got wonderful shots of birds with that Bigma. Now with the new Contemporary, his effective f.o.v. will go out to 900mm. And yes, it's a long day in the truck, often standing up to 12 or more hours a day.
I really like my Nikon 80-400 g with nacre coating but it is heavy lol lin

Have Nikon D7200 and 18-300. Thinking about buying 80-400.
Also considering another D7200 body to use with my 12-24 or 16-80.
Appreciate your thoughts/advice.
Have you considered the Tamron 18-400mm? This way you won't have to change lenses in a dusty environment.
We went to SA, Zimbawe, etc. The animals came so close to our truck we could practically touched them. No need for telephoto lens.
Ken, we use the 18-300mm, 50-300 and 70-300 we use on the D700, and D300. With our D7200 the 70-300mm-P is sharp enough for us that once the image is enlarged on an HD screen, the numbers on a license plate a mile away are clear. Wouldn't mind trying the 18-400mm but would be more likely to invest in a straight 400mm. We have around 20 Nikon lenses from all eras and a select few Tamrons with VCII, including an oder 18-300mm that didn't have VC; it was only $60, but its quite sharp considering it's age. sv
