D5000 Multi selector problem

My Nikon D5000 is only 2 years old and not used to excess but the multi selector is acting up. The move curser up button just doesn't work all the time and it's frustrating. Has anyone had a similar problem and what's to be done? Thanks in advance.

I've never experienced this, but give this a try. Reset the camera to its default settings by pressing the two buttons on lower left and upper right (p78 in manual).
If that doesn't work, remove the battery, turn on the camera, and press the shutter button for about 30 seconds. Sounds strange, but it solves some problems.
