Good morning. I am getting really frustrated. I take what I think look like decent pictures when I put them in Lightroom but when my husband sees them, he says they are blurry. I don’t know whether to get rid of my camera or my husband. Any suggestions?

I'd say, the husband! Maybe he needs glasses? Are you looking at the photos in 1:1 ratio to check for sharpness? That will give you a good idea of how sharp or how blurry an image is. If the images are not sharp perhaps you need to improve your hand-holding technique or use a tripod. I nearly always use a tripod. But there are exceptions to this, such as recently when shooting in the jungle of Costa Rica: I had to hand hold a Nikon 200-500 so I make every attempt to steady my arm with my body to get a sharp shot.

your subjects appear clear. if he is talking about the background of foreground blur. that's a focus meter issue

They are lacking focus on the subjects, so I guess hubby got lucky and can stick around for a while!

They are definitely soft. Can't check EXIF on my phone but guessing too slow of shutter speed as Linda of Maine suggested. Keep camera and husband, change speed.

Especially keep husband if that is him with the chain saw doing all the hard work! If he is the fisherman, I'd reconsider, unless he caught some really good fish to eat!! The images do look soft, but not really blurry, at least to me, from camera or person-shake. Could it be a less than optimal lens issue? Are you perhaps too close or too far away to get a good shot or for the particular lens you are using (each lens has a minimum distance required for focus)? And, what shutter speed are you using? Lots of variables when problems occur.

Thank you so much. All points worth considering. Neither is my husband, but they could be contenders depending on the right criteria. Lol

Nice "Roller" in your avatar space... or is it just a Bentley?

Maybe some details, please.

There's a lot of noise in these photos. ISO 1600 is a bit high for this camera. I would try not to go over ISO 400 unless you have to. Also, at F14 your camera is somewhat diffraction limited which will result in a loss of detail in the photo. Try shooting at ISO 400 or less and with a more open aperture, say F8? Your shutter speed was high enough (unless you are bit shaky) to rule out motion blur. The settings that I recommend will result in a slower shutter speed, so hold it steady, or use a tripod.

Of the 3 photos, 2 were set up to be able to download, of those two, only Mr. Chainsaw photo had EXIF data, ss at 1/250 should be fast enough, although at 250mm focal length, it is pushing it. I looked at both in photoshop, I have no idea where you were trying to focus with Mr. Chainsaw. With Mr. Fisherman, it looks like focus went on the closer fishing pole. Are you allowing the camera to pick the focus, or are you?

Yes, the closer pole is indeed in better focus. Use a single focus point and focus on the main subject. If it's a person, focus on the persons eyes.

Looking at the chainsaw image, you have the camera in a manual exposure mode using f/14 1/250 ISO-1600. Although there's areas for improvement, the exposure is fine but the focus is missing. The data that doesn't come over from Lightroom are the focus mode and the point of focus. Can you attached a copy of this image straight from the camera, if captured in JPEG? Alternatively, can you describe the focus mode you're using? Do you have the camera lens set to autofocus mode?

#1 doesn't have enough EXIF data to use, and #3 has none. #2 shows that you used 1/250 second shutter speed, so that should have prevented blurring due to camera shake, however, your camera may not do well at ISO 1600. Also, f/14 might not be in the "sweet spot" of the lens you were using. Just a thought.

Not sure how to attach the file straight from the camera. But here is the info screen from the camera for this picture. Does that help? I used manual focus for the camera and the lens.

Thank you for trying, but alas, the information needed isn't in these displays from the back of the camera. You do show you're using RAW + Large JPEG, what I'm looking for is a copy of that JPEG for what appears to be image #5114. If you display the Q menu and take a picture that will help. Looking at a copy of your manual, at page 100, it looks like a button on the upper right, when pressed, will display the AF points. But, that's a current setting rather than what was used for image #5114. Having that actual image would work better.

In LR, which image file do you have, the RAW or JPEG? If you right-click the image in LR, you can use option "Show In Folder" from the menu to navigate directly the image file. The RAW is probably too big to communicate via UHH. Let us know the available files / options you find when looking for the JPEG from the camera / card or within your LR catalog.
