"When you hear the sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine at full throttle-----it's music."
These photos are of an RAF Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IX. This plane in the photos participated in the Battle of Britain.
Thank you very much, DNW; I appreciate it.

I love the plane & yes at full throttle it is music - BUT - The Spitfire Mk IX did not exist in the summer of 1940 -- Lucky for the Brits. The Mk I did
One of my favorite warbirds.

IMHO, this was the most beautifully designed fighter of WWII., the pilot telling me he felt that the plane had a look of organic beauty.
Trust GPS Phil!! And good work on your part!
I don't know a thing about planes, but I know I certainly do like looking at them. Beautiful shots, Rob!
They don't design them like this any more.
The Meteor was a later variant of the Merlin, de-tuned down to 650 HP, and used in the Centurion tank. I was a tank mechanic back in the 60's and there is no sound quite like that of 4 or 5 Meteors running at the same time in a hanger. Sounds like a full symphony :)
