Bless you, Linda. I read the OP's post and wanted to scream, "Just go without your camera and enjoy the beauty of the place. There have been enough @$%@#$^ pictures taken of the place already!"

Photography is quickly becoming the repository of cliches. Increasingly, I take photos mainly of people taking photos.

Isn't this a photography forum? That advice is like telling a wine lover to go to Napa Valley, enjoy the views but don't taste the wine because, you know, its wine, you've tasted it before.

Yes, go to the slot canyons - but do not take a camera - because everyone has seen a picture of them

Use a tour company that is run by Lionel Big Thumb. He is the best.

Chief Tsosie no longer does Photo Tours just regular tours. I just called them to double-check.

Dear all,
Thanks for the input. For those who worry about seeing more pictures: I will take the camera but won't post them! (Or will at least clearly label them so you know not to look!)

The canyons are pretty dark. Use a fairly fast lens and a wide angle. Adjust with your iso as best you can. The problem with a tripod can be that the floor in the canyons is very fine sand, and you'll find the feet sinking in, so be prepared for that. Search for a tour for photographers. These guides can be very helpful with photo advice, and regular tours frequently have too many people in the group and move too rapidly. The best time of day to shoot is around 11 or 12 o'clock, when the sun is more directly overhead, later it gets much darker in the canyons.

The tilt screen in Live View will come in handy. No tripod on the regular tours but with a tilt screen and plenty of rocks to hold the camera against, you can get some relatively long exposures. Expect to handle wide exposure latitudes with mostly shadows below and sunlit stones along the top of the slot often in the same frame.

Been to lower twice. Have two families-go to the one on the right and ask for a "photographers Pass"-- have to have a tripod and wife also has to have one. Best time of day is 11-1. Don't need a long lens since a tight slot. What works for me is to spot meter on the brightest part of the photo-avoid any sky since it will blow out the photo. Used a high f stop--11 to 22 to capture the detail. If time allows, might want to try Buckskin Gulch-longest slot in NA at about 19 miles-can have some waterholes but not deep. Close to "the wave" about half way between Kanab and Page. Check the weather before going into any slot-if rain within 50 miles may want to avoid.
