I'm Gonna Have a Show!

An exhibition, actually. I've never shown my photos in a public venue, so I have a lot of questions. I'm not a professional photographer, although once upon a time I did make money through photography.

This exhibition came about after I returned from a photo trip to Utah, where someone urged me (and the venue) to have an exhibit. The venue is an independent, community-based coffee house. It just celebrated its first year in business, and is doing much better than originally expected. Part of their community offering is two wall areas for local artists to display (and sell, if they wish) their work. I had originally selected eleven pieces, but I may choose more, since I have a lot of wall with which to work.

I hadn't thought of showing anything larger than 16x24, but I might reconsider. Most of my photos are landscapes. Some are close-ups.

I am looking for suggestions on material(s), sizes, printing labs... just about anything, from those who have been there, done that, and got the t-shirt. I am not trying to launch a new career (although it would be pretty cool), but I want to make the best of this rare opportunity.

Any suggestion is welcome. For example, "Do not put copyright watermarks on your photos" (something I've already heard).

Thats exciting! Look at how other work is presented so you can decide how you would like yours to look. You should look for a good framer to work with. Its not inexpensive, but the framing can make all the difference.

When I exhibit in a situation like that I offer note cards of the photos for sale for a donation to the venue or sponsor or of the exhibit. I don’t like the bother of selling the photos and this way I can support the venue. It also puts my photos out there and I enjoy the ego boost when people select their favorite. Some times I sell singles and other times a bundle of 5 cards(with envelopes).
Also, I shop the thrift stores for interesting frames. Some need a little work, but I can get a nice frame that really sets off the photograph for $5 rather than spending $100+.

I've started the process. I've ordered a number of prints, ranging from unframed glossies, to stretched canvas wraps. This has been an interesting experience. One site I used had a "wizard" that would complain I should use prints with a ppi > 180. My ppi was set to 300 when I created the image! I also found that 30MB is too large for some print services.

@ngrea, you mentioned bundles of cards. I like that idea! I too, am not doing this to sell photos, and I've decided that should someone really want to purchase something, I'll donate the proceeds. As for frames, I was thinking of hitting the craft stores. Some of my images, while "standard" size, aren't the most common frame sizes.

The show is coming together. Prints that I've ordered have started arriving, and I've framed those that are paper, joining those that are canvas wrapped and mounted. I like the canvas!

Those of you who have exhibited, or attend exhibitions, what draws your eye? I have a couple of 16"x20" framed prints, some canvas slight smaller, and a variety of 11"x14", "9"x12" and 8"x10." To my eye, the 8"x10" look small. I put one in a frame with a good amount of wood so it would look larger, but even then it's small. At least by comparison. On a mantle or desk, maybe. But on a wall...?

Oh, ETA: I want to post a title and some data on each shot. Does anyone have any recommendations on this? I'm thinking something along the size of a 3"x5" card. Any ideas?
