Guess I was having a bad day when I showed some sample photos I took to a physical therapist because after she said that I must have a good camera, I told her I could give you my camera and you couldn't take photos with it. I think I kind of hurt her feelings, that wasn't my intent and then I felt badly. Like I said I must have been having a bad day.

And all she said was the truth unless you have a bad camera. So right you hurt her feeling. You must have a bad day.

A good violin can make a beautiful sound but by itself cannot play beautiful music.

I say "Thanks", but I've wanted to come back with, "I've trained it well...."

I like this response. We have trained our cameras well. Especially when we do not use auto settings. Or have the cameras trained us?

I'm sure we've all heard this a few times at least...and I'm wondering about the verious ways we respond to those well-meaning comments. Often our 'inner voice' is saying, "Hey, I took that photo, I selected the lighting, composition, timing, exposure, etc...the camera was just the tool I used...!" Our better angels usually come to the rescue with some version of, "Thank you, very much", but I'd like to hear the reactions or responses from others.

Who hasn't heard the snappy come-back that goes something like..."Shakespeare wrote some great plays, he must have had a very good typewriter..!"
I'm sure we've all heard this a few times at least... (show quote)
Yeah, if I ask her really nice, she'll do that!

"Thank you; you're very kind." They've paid me a compliment and I won't be snarky in return.

"Yes, to do good work, a good carpenter needs good tools!"

Not really; to do good work a carpenter needs functional tools and not all functional tools are necessarily good tools; they just need to work and the carpenter needs to know how to use them.
I say this from personal experience. My maternal grandfather was a master carpenter/cabinet maker and his personal tools were very old borderline junk that he'd been using since he was a young man. When he retired he gave me a hand made tool box that contained his hand tools. He told me, these tools are very old and pretty much worn out and by today's standards, could be considered junk, but they still work and it's amazing what you can make with junk if you know how.

I don't know the whole story here but, you told her she couldn't take photos with your camera. Sounds like you were implying she isn't smart enough to use your camera. How did you know that she doesn't have just as good or even better camera?!

I have a friend with a D3400 and he keeps asking how my pictures are so much better than his. I tell him it is because i have been involved in taking pictures since I was 5 AND my camera IS better than his.

I smile and say, "Of course it does. It's a Nikon". Now all you out there, BEFORE YOU GET ALL MAD AND POUNCE ON ME, I follow up with this bit of information. I tell them I love the work of a photographer named Art Wolfe. It is very good work and he uses Canons. So what's the question?

Before we fall down in the mire of all the petulence that seems to accompany ones preference of equipment, let me say this. One's choice of equipment has little to do with the quality of work produced by that equipment. The NRA says guns don't kill people....people kill people. Well, cameras don't take photos, people take photos. If you don't think that is true, think of someone you may know who spent $3,000, give or take, on a new Nikon or Canon or whatever and couldn't get a good pic out of it to save their lives, because they think the camera takes the pic, when the success or failure lies with the user and not the brand.
