The Colonne de Julliet or July Column is located in Place de la Bastille, a square in Paris where the Bastille prison stood until its storming and its subsequent physical destruction between July 14, 1789 and July 14, 1790. Colonne de Juillet commemorates the Revolution of 1830. The Bastille prison symbolized the tyranny of the Bourbon monarchs and the storming of the prison on July 14, 1789 signaled the beginning of the French revolution. In 1792, the monarchy was abolished and King Louis XVI and his wife Marie-Antoinette were sent to the guillotine for treason in 1793.
