In spite of the mid-day conditions, Diane, your pictures are still absolutely stunning!

I truly don't have cause to complain with a day so clear and calm. It's just my love of dramatic lighting that compels me to seek those golden hour opportunities, especially around water. But I did get a few beauties at the start and, later, at the end of the day. I would have to say that it's the Tioga Road which I will remember Yosemite by. As for travel planning, I can only put myself in the vicinity for opportunities--more often than not, it's the happenstance glance out of the corner of my eye that catches some really special scene that only exists in that moment.

True that. "Serendipity" is the most valuable tool in my camera bag.

Great job composing and making them sooo excellent! Thanks for sharing.

That's really nice to hear, Doug! It's hard to show anything new that hasn't been covered a zillion times before from such a well-loved national park as Yosemite.

What struck me the most about Yosemite was how small the valley floor actually is, its greatest asset being access. There must be so many equally gorgeous rock cliffs and waterfalls scattered about the Sierras that no one but the most avid of hikers will ever get to see for lack of roads. The saddest thing about Yosemite is the law of supply and demand--not only is lodging mostly for those with deep pockets (and it's a mighty long drive to get to the valley from outside the park), but crowding is significant. While I'm delighted to have gotten there, I would only return in autumn when the crowds die down and I could soak in the scenery in an unhurried manner.

Thank you, jrwallace! I didn't know my way around at all, so I missed a great deal--hopefully, though, I have a decent overview.

Serendipity--just the right word to describe my greatest aide to photography.

Well, since you've taken all the best shots, what are the res of us supposed to photograph?

I agree about going in autumn. Crowding has been a problem for as long as I can remember going back into the mid-'50's. Years ago, I hiked portions of the John Muir Trail near Yosemite and into Kings Canyon National Park, and there are countless spectacular views to photograph. However, I think you did extremely well with these shots. IMO, you avoided the typical compositions with beautiful results!

Shoot!! I didn't even put a dent in the possibilities, so you can't blame me for not gettin' out there yourself.
Thanks a bunch for the super nice compliment, jesmason!

On one of the earlier posts, I shared a picture of Mack Lake which is on a trail in the John Muir Wilderness. For me, it was a bear! I can't imagine doing an extensive hike in that wilderness. You were a tough youngin'!
