They almost always come back to a perch. So, if it flies away when you approach, stay awhile cause it will likely return. Just have your settings ready for when it does...

So what settings do you use? I had F/5, 1/500, auto ISO. As you can see it was mid-day sun

I just put this one up the other day. F11, !/250 ISO 100. Like yours midday sun...That said, I used a manual focus macro lens. 105mm F2.8 lens from the mid-1980's. Entirely in manual modes.

That is very nice shot, Scott. I may have had a little overkill on the SS. I was afraid if he launched I might not be able to capture it. I used a sony bridge camera I keep with 95% of the time, because you never know.... It's paid off so far. I'm going back to that spot with my macro and just hang around...see what shows up. Thanks for the tips.

Well done for the first time. As mentioned earlier a higher f stop and a shutter speed of at least 1/250 but probably not in excess of 1/1000, depending on conditions. A lower ISO is helpful cutting down on the noise if you can get away with it. vz
