I am interested in purchasing the newer AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR to use on my D810. I have done a lot of research on this lens and have found a few incompatible issues as it relates to the D810. Most of the info that I have found related to this lens is several month old. I would like to hear from someone who has this lens that is using it on the D810. I am not interested in the DX version or use on any other Nikon camera. I also apologize in advance if I have missed previous comments on this website related to the lens. I also have read the articles by Thom and Ken on this lens. Just looking for real experience from UHH. Thanks

While I do not have that lens, I recently updated the Firmware of my D750, which according to Nikon, makes it fully compatible with no limitations with that lens. If you check the Nikon site I believe there is also and update for your D810 that does the same, the updates were released in mid June. I do have the AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 G IF-ED VR and really find it to be a really good lens.

Thanks for the feedback. I have already updated to the latest 1.14 for the D810 and have checked the Nikon website. I am looking for someone that has the AF-P lens on a D810. The lens is getting good reviews, but lacks some features like no distance indicator on the lens and not sure about the by wire manual focus. Trying to get feedback on these issues. Thanks.

Been using the 70-300 through the D70, D300, D810 and now D850. It was/is my go to for dragon flies, if I can get back to them, - light-weight, sharp, fast focus, not unduly long in length. Bought the up-grade and happy with that also.

I can only tell you that I am using the 70-300 AF-S VR Nikon lens and I am very satisfied with its peformance.

Thanks for all of your input. Great info. Still looking for someone that is using the af-p version on the D810. It is a completely different lens than the af-s. Nikon has removed or changed a few items on this lens.

I've using the lens on a D500 and love it, fast focus and sharp. Three focus modes, AF AF/M and M. Prefer FF lens for wildlife. Sorry I couldn't help you on your D610.

Thanks for the reply. Have you used the lens in manual mode, if so is it easy to know how far to turn the focus ring because of the camera actually moving the focus and not the focus ring.

With AF off, focus is by the lens ring only. I'm not sure what you mean as to how far the ring is turned.

Sorry for the confusion, I am considering purchasing this lens and have read that the focus ring is not actually connected to the lens but sends signal to camera to move the lens focus. The article that I read also said that if you move the focus ring too fast the focusing of the lens by the camera will lag behind then eventually catch up. That’s what I was wondering when I asked how far you had to move the lens ring to focus.

With the camera AF off it's about half a turn from infinity to 8ft. Hope this helps. I use in camera motor focus, lens AF off.

I think it was Thom who specifically mention the "focus-by -wire" and he was hppy with it. Remember that the focus is a function of the lens and how it works is NOT dependent on the camera it is mounted on. If it works well on a D500 or a D850 it will work well on a D810.

Thom’s Comment on the lens “fly by wire” is what got my attention and led me to ask someone like yourself who had the lens about actual experience. Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions.
