Mounting ring replacement

Since my Nikon kit lenses have plastic mounting rings, is it possible to replace them with metal rings? I have not had any issue with the plastic mounts, but was just wondering if that could be done.

Mounting rings? Are you referring to the three mounting flanges on the lens?
When my D90 with a mounted 18-55mm kit lens dropped just 18-inches onto a carpeted floor, two plastic flanges snapped-off of lens. The cost of repair (plastic only, not metal flanges) was more than buying same lens on eBay.
