shutter lag ?

because the shot i take in live view fires slowly compared to looking through the view finder and the live view switched off , is this called shutter lag ? and if so if there was lots of light available does this prevent it from happening because when i shoot in live view in M mode it opens a quick pause then closes by the sound of it wheres without the live view on it fires instantly with no pause? i am presently goggling it and seeing what i can find, nowt in the manual about it. any ideas ?

On my camera, live view focuses very slowly compared to non-live view. You may be confusing this with a "slow shutter". Once focus is established in live view, eg, using manual focus, the shutter works virtually instantly.

Most cameras use a different focusing method in live view than they do in regular mode.

as you say when focus is achieved in live view and set to M then when i take the pic it should work instantly ! well when i achieve focus i put it in manual focus and then press the button, as i am in live view i cant see through the view finder but once the button is pressed it opens up for say a second or so after the first clicking noise then a pause then closes ! this is what confuses me because u can see the view finder is open for a longer time than the 1/1600 sec shutter i set or is this nothing to do with it for instance when i press the the button is the first opening in the view finder the shutter speed i set and then the pause and then another noise is say writing to the card and preparing it for the live view ? eh thanx for any explanation, i went through my manual but it did not fully explain, but i will take another look. thank you for ur time !

I'm assuming this is a dslr yes? These cameras though live view capable weren't intended to be used this way. They are intended for use with the view finder.

That said, when you switch to live view the mirror has to come up and out of the way so the sensor can see what you're lens is seeing. Release the shutter, the mirror drops, then pops up for the photo and back down again.

That is not shutter lag... that's live view lag and it doesn't have to be that way if you'll just use your view finder all the time.

I do understand that at times, if you want a certain angle, getting into a position to get that angle is difficult if you have to lay down, squat or what ever so live view can be very handy for those times.

But trying to use the view finder most of the time will take you a lot further is actually seeing what your lens is seeing.

Good Luck

Jim
