Hi everyone, I new to shooting with manuel setting. Due to a disability I'm trying to retrain as a Real Estate photographer. It's something that I can physically do. I've had the PS CC training, and read everything I can and watched these videos. So I actually have many questions. But right now my question is about the scandisk. I don't know if I have anything on it for sure. It says I do but I can't get any pictures to show up,. It's indicates no images. So I thought I'd reformat the disk. That's where it says 160 KB. Don't know what to do. Nothing transfers. Any suggestions out there? Thanks for reading.

I am going to try and understand. You have a Scandisk memory card, presumably a SD, that you think you've taken images in a digital camera and cannot "find them?" Did you originally format the SD memory card in your camera or in your PC? You need to format the disk while in your camera's memory slot.

Hope this helps.

I presume you haven't had any responses because you have so many indefinite statements. You state you don't know if you "have anything on it" but I'm not sure what it is. Then "It says I do", but again I'm not sure what it is. "It's indicates not images"... ? Again. "... it says 160 KB". I'm at at loss to give you any advice and assume others are in the same boat.
Trying to cut the Gordian Knot: Have you pulled the chip out of the camera; inserted it into your computer; and if you're using Windows, looked at the files using file explorer? If you can see pictures then, you better copy them to a hard disk a'fore you do anything else.

What is the "it" that says (said) no images?
Since you re-formatted it, there will be nothing to transfer.

Do you mean Sandisk (a solid state disk & memory card manufacturer)? Scandisk is a Microsoft utility for hard disk maintenance.

Sorry that came out so confusing. When I first tried to use this scandisk no images showed up to view in my camera. When I looked at formatting it (in my camera still) message said I'd loose any images taken and showed 64KB. I think I had tried to take several pictures and then found out that I wasn't getting the images (I was talking them in raw). So I took used the USB cord to attached my camera to my laptop and the message said can't connect (I think). But I had just downloaded the images from the first SD card. I'm thinking that I took pictures without formatting this second scan disk card. So any pictures didn't register? Does that sound better, more accurate. If so I guess I'll just format the card because basically I have nothing too loose. But 64KB sounded like more than I could have taken. Anyway I was concerned that if there were pictures there was there any way to get them and not lose all? Thanks for responding everyone

Oh I didn't know about scandisk referring to anything else. This is the small sandisk card that goes into your camera to record the pictures taken. And I spelled it wrong. Sorry for the confusion.

Probably easier to just refer them as the card type (SD, CF, etc) or memory cards so everyone will know what you mean. Also I see you’re referring to the size as 64KB. More likely the metric you want is GB (card size) or MB (individual file size). A 64 GB card is a standard size, whereas an individual photo might be anywhere from 5MB to 50MB depending on the camera and the type file you’re storing (JPEG or raw).

Now that we have the definitions out of the way, let me suggest the following: if the shots you’ve already taken aren’t especially important, format both cards in the camera, shoot a couple of images on each card, download them (either with a card reader or a USB cable attached to your computer) to make sure they work, and carry on with your life. When you plug either the card reader or camera into your computer, they should be recognized within a few seconds.

If the shots you already took are important, then try downloading them via either via the card reader or USB directly connected to the camera as mentioned above. If that doesn’t work (and the shots are really important), then download a copy of Recuva SW or the Sandisk recovery SW, and follow the instructions.

I hope that’s all clear and helps

If you are referring to a SanDisk SD card and if you truly mean 160 or 64 Kb (kilobytes) then that is probably just the space taken by the FAT (File Allocation Table) to keep track of the card file system. If that is the case you can reformat it - you are losing nothing.

With card in computer you can always right click on the SD Card file, then click Properties. That will give you card size, plus free and used space.

One thing I am wondering is if you're really meaning 64GB for the card size. This is a standard card size, and all recent (last few years) cameras can use a card this size. BUT, older PCs may not be able to read a 64GB card. The transition from 32GB to 64GB necessitated a change in the card and it is not compatible with older PCs. All newer PCs will have no problems. The solution if this is the case to purchase a SD card reader that plugs into a USB port on the PC. They are inexpensive.

If you took pictures, then reformatted your memory card (sounds like you have a Sandisk SD memory card, 64 gb), then for all intents and purposes anything you took was erased during the reformat. There are ways to recover lost files, even after a format, but that is beyond what you should be concerned with at the present time.

Not knowing how to see what is on your card, and not understanding what you are looking at when you do see something indicate that you may want to work with someone who can help you with basic computer skills.

I suggest considering a membership in a local photo club, where you will find people there you can tap for advice and guidance on just about anything related to photography. Or take courses, pay someone to privately tutor you, etc. But forums like these are not going to be places to get this level of advice and guidance.

And 64 Kb is a very small size for a photo. I would just format the card if that is what you mean.

Not to confuse the issue.. but Scandisk is an antivirus program and command. I think you mean SanDisk which is the media card. Because you were talking formating etc.. I was initally confused. I think that you have a couple of issues. First, if you put the card into an SD card reader on your pc, can you see any images on the card? If so, there is nothing wrong with the card. Personally, I never hook my camera (via USB cable) to my computer. The USB from the camera is alot slower than a card reader. Secondly, Lightroom (I'm assuing that LR is what you are talking about for PS training) has a setting to tell (on import) where to look. Verify that this is looking in the right place. It could be something as simple as a bad usb cable or usb port.

To handle and put a stop to all the confusion you can just buy a new SD card. Then format the new card to the camera. If you have a good photo lab close by they have a program to see if there is any retrievable info on the old SD card. Usually will charge about 10 dollars if there is and free if there isn't. Cards are cheap and its not worth taking a chance on a card that may be defective.
