Another excellent one. The woman carrying the pillow and the suitcase appears to be homeless. The man on the right is oblivious and the couple striding confidently toward you make a nice contrast.

Homeless? Look again, she is clearly at least middle class, and maybe upper middle class. Out on a shopping spree? Travelling? Hard to say.

Thanks, Andy. But her clothing and the suitcase aren't those of a homeless person.

Quite possibly not, but...I think you might be surprised at the number of ordinary looking people you see on the street of a major city who are, in fact, homeless. She appears to be carrying a pillow, sleeping bag of some sort, and a rolling suitcase, which are the three tells, at least in my experience.

My agency runs transitional housing that accepts referrals from shelters, and you would find the number of well spoken, clean, middle class appearing people referred to us is shocking. My property manager is on vacation, and just this morning, I took an application from a woman whose former addresses are in upscale zip codes and whose former boyfriend drives around town in a Bentley. For nearly twenty years, I've been a director and former president of a local organization that serves the homeless, and I've participated in the annual "point in time" street survey work several times.

Not all homeless people fit the stereotypes.

Well, Andy, I can't challenge you on "middle-class" homelessness, as you're the one who works in this field. It must feel odd dealing with this type person. But I still wouldn't take her for homeless, based on her clothing, which seems too inappropriate for living on the street. Now, if it looked a bit more worn, and looser fitting,....

I appreciate the support. It’s surprising to me too, even after all these years.

Well going back to "The things they carried" as the basis of revealing life's details; what is it that she's carrying?

We have a rolling suit case, a computer bag, a cylindrical pillow, what appears to be a back pillow, some sort of other rectangular cloth covered package, and a metal can of something. Furthermore, it would appear that she has had breast augmentation surgery and that she has some sort of complexion problem. What she doesn't have is sunglasses (based on the squinting, she wishes she did.)

She is standing in front of an office building. She may be waiting on transportation to the airport from an appointment with a customer in Enterprise Plaza (would she have met with a client in those shoes and outfit), but I have to believe she is, in fact, as AndyH said.

And as always good work in this capture Voss.

She looks as if she is fresh off the airplane--nice one.

That's what my initial thought was jaymatt. Now I'm afraid I have to agree with AndyH, but we can all agree its a thought provoking image of a slice of life in Houston.

It seems odd that she is cradling an unopened can of something against her chest. Tonights meal perhaps? With the pillows and the unopened can perhaps she has fallen on hard times.I believe we will never really know.

That's what great street photography does, IMHO. It often asks more questions than it provides answers. Voss is a master at it, and this image, whatever the reality behind it, is provocative, a bit mysterious, and maybe even sad. One of my favorites of his Houston scenes.
