If you are into old cars and racing, you probably know about the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix week. The racing starts at Pitt Race in Wampom PA (off exit 13 of the turnpike - about 40 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. Events throughout the next week in and around Pittsburgh - including a car cruise at the Lowes waterfront complex and culminating in the 2 day car show and antique races through the streets of Schenley Park near Downtown Pittsburgh. With the final 2 day attendance in the hundreds of thousands, the free spectator event its a great place to see just about any car ever made ! The marque of the year is BMW this year with around 400 BMW's from all years expected to be on display. This along with other German, American, British, Asian and other cars from around the world. Bring your walking shoes and plan to spend the day.
All money from the race, special events and car show registrations goes directly to the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny School. In 36 years of this event, over $5 million has been donated. All events and shows are put on by a group of 2000 VOLUNTEERS (only the executive director is employed by the organization !!!) . More details and event schedule, see PVGV.org .
Here are some shots from the practice time at Pitt Race on friday. If you come to Schenley Park saturday or sunday, I hope to see you there. I'll be directing traffic near the entrance in front of the clubhouse. BTW, my avatar (larger shot below) is a shot of the car show at Schenley the first year I volunteered. Just one small section of the show !
