Good after noon fellow UHHers.
Recently switched to BBF. Still having issues getting used to it, but I will continue for a while trying to get used to using it before our family gathering next month.
Here is my issue and not sure if this normal or if I have something set incorrectly.
Once I acquire focus using BBF and then press the shutter release button to take the picture, the image appears on my display screen, but will not shut off automatically to allow me to focus on my next shot. I have to half press the shutter release button to close the screen. Once I do that, I can refocus using the BBF button.
Yes I do like to "chimp" to verify all is well, but how do I get the display to close after "X" seconds so I can refocus on my next shot?
To set up BBF, I went to menu -> Controls -> Assign AE-L/AF-L -> AF On
I read Steve Perry's "The Back Button Autofocus Guide For Nikon Cameras", but this issue was not addressed as far as I was able to tell. The same for David Busch's "Nikon D5300 Guide to Digital SLR Photography".
I have a feeling I'm doing something wrong, so before I do a factory reset, hoping to get some answers.
Thanks for your insight and help.
Have you tried simply pushing the button you have assigned to the BBF function? I have a D7200 & D90...all I have to do is press the button I have assigned to BBF and the camera focuses just fine (and the monitor screen goes dark!).
Have you set the Autofocus mode to AF-C (Continuous-servo AF)?
You would probably be better off if you turned the "Auto Playback" off in the menu. Then just press the playback button when you want to view an image. Pressing that button a second time should shut it off.
I haven't tried this, but when using auto playback, pressing the playback button may still turn it off.

Tried that and it didn't do anything.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Focus mode is set to AF-C.
Again thnks for the suggestion.

Good question, jayw. Unfortunately I don’t have a very good answer.
I also have a D5300 set to BBF. I have it set to AF-C, but I don’t think that setting has anything to do with your issue.
I hadn’t really thought about this until I read your post, but it seems that somehow the BBF setup interferes with the “auto off timer” settings. I didn’t notice it that that much because I don’t have the camera set to auto play-back (“Image Review”). To review an image, I press the playback button to bring up the image in the monitor and then I turn it off before I shoot again. But sometimes I forget to turn it off and then I run into the problem you describe, i.e., the focus button does not work while there is an image shown on the monitor.
The monitor, with the image, is supposed to stay on based on the settings in “Custom Setting Menu” -- “Timers/AE lock” -- “Auto off timers”; but for some reason it doesn’t. It stays on for about 15 seconds no matter what the menu setting is. So I don't know how you can get the monitor to turn of in a time of your choosing.
I suggest you use my approach (also suggested by Bill_de above) and turn off auto playback (go to Playback Menu, Image Review to do this). Then use the playback button to bring up/turn off the image in the monitor.
Maybe Steve Perry can help with this!

Push the BBF again - will turn the dislay off in preparation for the next shot
I have the same BBF setup on my D5500 but it does not happen on my camera. I wonder if that was one of the changes/fixes Nikon added when they went to the newer model?
I have a D7000 and my display screen does not come on unless I press the button for it. Must be a camera menu setting you have somehow selected.

Tried that and no luck.
Thanks for the suggestion.

That may be right. I sent a message to Nikon. Hopefully they'll answer.

Will mark it down so I remember. May be a while, so don't think I forgot.
